2013 Kia Optima engine oil capacity

The 2013 Kia Optima requires 4.9 quarts, or 4.6 liters of engine oil.
Don't confuse engine oil capacity with engine displacement, which measures the volume of an engine's cylinders. The Kia Optima has an engine displacementof 2 to 2.4 liters. Its engine oil capacity, which measures how much engine oil is required to complete an oil change, is 4.6 liters. As you can see, displacement and engine oil capacity are not the same.

What kind of oil does a 2013 Kia Optima need?

Okay, so your Kia requires 4.9 quarts of oil—but what oil?
Remember, not all oils are not created equally, so you can’t use any old oil in your Kia! You’ll want to consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the oil type that’s been tested to keep your car functioning at its optimum level.
If you’ve misplaced your owner’s manual or would just prefer to have us tell you, let us do the honors! Per the 2013 Optima’s owner’s manual, Kia recommends using 5W-20 engine oil in the 2.4L engine while it recommends 5W-30 engine oil in the 2L engine. However, both engines will function properly if you use 5W-30 oil according to the owner's manual.
Not sure what that means? We’ve got you. Let’s break down what “5W-30” means.
First of all, engine oils are rated for viscosity. The “5” in 5W-30 denotes that this oil has a low viscosity rating in cold temperatures, and the “W” stands for “winter.” The “30” indicates that the oil is relatively thin during hot temperatures, which will reduce the amount of wear and tear on the engine.
  • The genuine article: Keep it simple and go with the original. Per your Kia’s owner’s manual, go for 5W-20 or 5W-30 engine oil.

How often to change oil on a 2013 Kia Optima

How often do you need to
change the oil
in your 2013 Kia Optima? We’re glad you asked!
Kia recommends changing your Optima’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, but if you don’t log a lot of miles, every six months may be a better indicator.
If you took our synthetic oil suggestion above, this kind of oil lasts longer—way longer. In fact, experts recommend changing synthetic oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles.
Keep in mind that these are simply estimates. If you want to be precise, you’ll need to check your Optima’s engine oil regularly. Look for these tell-tale signs that your engine oil needs to be replaced:
  • Dark brown or black engine oil (clean oil is light brown or amber)
  • Coarse or gritty engine oil
  • Changes in your Optima’s performance
  • Unfamiliar
    engine noises
    and/or burning smells

How to change your oil and oil filter

You now know the type and quantity of engine oil required to change your Optima’s oil. There’s only one thing left to do: change that oil!
First, you’ll want to gather your materials. To complete an oil change on your Optima, you’ll need:
  • A socket wrench
  • A drain pan
  • A filter wrench (to remove the old oil filter)
  • 4.9 quarts of oil (duh)
You’ll want to run your Optima’s engine for a few minutes to get it to operating temperature. This should only take about five minutes. Next, turn the engine off, open the hood, and follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap.
  • Put the drain pan underneath the engine and take off the oil drain bolt and washer.
  • Allow the old oil to drain into the drain pan.
  • Remove the old oil filter while the oil drains.
  • Install the new filter.
  • Once the oil has drained, replace the oil drain bolt
  • Refill the engine with the new oil and replace the cap
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Congratulations, you’ve completed your first oil change!
Once you’re finished, run your Optima’s engine again to check for any oil leaks. And be sure to dispose of your old oil responsibly. This means not throwing it in the trash, but instead putting it in a sealed container and taking it to a local recycling center. Please and thank you.
