How to replace an Alfa Romeo tail light

Cost: $25 to $100 (some replacements could cost up to $250)
Time: 5 to 20 minutes
Tools needed: Safety glasses, gloves, Philips head screwdriver, replacement parts
Difficulty: Easy
First, start by identifying the problem. Is the entire tail light assembly shattered or is the bulb simply burnt out? If the issue is visible damage, it won’t be hard to figure out where to start.
If both tail lights are out, you could have a broken fuse. If only one tail light is out, but both brake lights are still working, you probably have a bad bulb.
If you aren’t sure what the problem is, take your Alfa Romeo to the dealership or mechanic. They can help you pinpoint the problem and help you navigate more intimidating electrical or wiring issues. Never attempt a repair if you are feeling unsure about it
If you’re confident that you know which part needs replacing, locate the part number in your user/owner manual before ordering. You’ll want the correct part based on your Alfa Romeo’s model, year, trim level, and engine.
Gather any replacement parts, tools, and safety gear before following these steps to replace an Alfa Romeo tail light on the two most popular and available models. Always remember to disconnect the battery since you’ll be working with wires. You can do this by unscrewing the cables from the battery and the negative cable first.
Here’s the process for two popular Alfa Romeo models.

Stelvio Quadrifoglio

To replace the tail lights on the right side of a Stelvio Quadrifoglio:
  • Open up the trunk
  • Locate a panel on the right side within the trunk area. Twist the knobs to open up the panel.
  • Locate the tension screw and turn it left until loose and then pull it out
  • Pull the tail light straight back, towards you, to pull it out
  • You can then disconnect the taillight entirely
  • Swap out the bad bulb for a new one
  • To reinstall, repeat these steps in reverse
The left side tail light of this Alfa Romeo model will require a little more work to access. On this side of the car, you will need to locate the plastic trim with a small hatch and a bolt inside (near the top of the car within the trunk).
Remove the bolt with a 3/16th Allen wrench and pry the plastic trim open. The carpet will then pull away and give you access to the tension screw for the left taillight. Then, follow the same steps as you did on the right side.

GTV-6

This is the process to replace the tail lights for a GTV-6:
  • Open up the trunk
  • Locate the access panel on either or both sides within the trunk area
  • Open the access panel
  • Locate and unscrew the sockets within the access panel
  • Next, remove the connector by pulling a safety clip up and also pulling on the bulb housing. If changing the larger of the bulbs, there is a metal piece to press instead of a safety clip.
  • Replace the bulbs and repeat the steps above in reverse order
That’s it! You’re all set. Don’t forget to hook your battery back up so you can test your workmanship.
Key Takeaway Replacing an Alfa Romeo tail light isn’t a daunting task—just make sure you order the right part for your specific model and give yourself enough time for the repair.

Common reasons for Alfa Romeo tail light malfunctions

Sometimes, the cause of a broken tail light is obvious. Maybe you backed into a bike that wasn’t put away properly in the garage. A fender bender. A fly-away golf ball. Accidents happen and are usually easy to spot. If you are unsure of your tail light failure, consider these other reasons:
  • Dead bulb: If the problem is only your tail light and not also your brake light, it’s probably as simple as a burnt-out bulb.
  • Faulty wiring or fuses: If you replace the bulb and the tail light is still not lighting up, this could be due to a wiring issue or a broken fuse.
  • Damaged socket: Tail light sockets can be exposed to moisture and moisture will eventually cause corrosion. Check to see if there is any residue or build-up on the sockets when changing the bulb.
  • Broken control switch: If you’ve ruled out all of the above mechanical issues, this could be an electric issue.

Does car insurance cover broken tail lights?

Your car insurance might cover your Alfa Romeo’s broken tail light—but it may be a good idea to avoid submitting a claim for such a small repair especially if this is something you can correct yourself.
If you are in an accident and your car insurance policy includes collision and/or comprehensive insurance, you could get coverage for a broken Alfa Romeo tail light—especially if there is other damage to the vehicle. In that case, it would probably be worth submitting a claim.
Collision coverage
would pay for repairs caused by an accident that involves another vehicle or a stationary object (like a stop sign). Comprehensive insurance would come into play if your tail light was damaged by vandalism or some sort of natural disaster.
Don’t forget that you’ll have to
pay your deductible
before any insurance reimbursements can take place. In many cases, like accidents that cause significant damage, that saves you money. A tail light replacement is not a major expense so it might not be a good idea to go through insurance.
You could spend up to $100 replacing your Alfa Romeo broken tail light. The average car insurance deductible is $500.
Each time you submit an insurance claim, you could be looking at potential rate increases. If a repair cost doesn’t cause a burden for you, it may be best to not submit the repair through an insurance claim.
