How to check your Alfa Romeo’s VIN

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a sequence of 17 digits that uniquely identifies your Alfa Romeo.
Your Alfa Romeo VIN can be found in several places, including:
  • Your insurance card
  • Your DMV-issued registration card
  • Driver’s side doorjamb
  • The windshield on the driver's side corner
  • Embossed on a vehicle frame in the engine area
These are the main areas to find your Alfa Romeo VIN, but it’s possible to find it printed in other areas as well, such as under the hood of your car.

How to decode an Alfa Romeo VIN

Your VIN contains important information about your car. This is why the DMV needs it to process your application for various car-related services, such as your vehicle registration. It can also be used to check if a vehicle was stolen.
VINs have been around in the United States since the 1950s. However, it wasn’t until 1981 that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) streamlined the system by standardizing the 17 digits. Modern-day VINs now reflect the same type of information across all models, makes, and continents.
All ten numerical digits (0-9) and the letters of the alphabet, excluding I, O, and Q, are used in VINs. The letters were excluded to avoid any confusion with the numbers 1, 0, and 9.

First position: country of origin

The first three digits of any VIN is the world manufacturer identifier (WMI) code. The first number is the region where the manufacturer is located.
Alfa Romeos are only made in Italy, which is why all Alfa Romeo VINs start with a Z

Positions 2-3: manufacturer information

Digit positions 2 and 3 indicate your vehicle’s manufacturer. The third digit is used to indicate the type of vehicle, such as a passenger car, SUV, or truck. However, it can be different for each automaker. For example, the
Alfa Romeo Giulia
could have the code AR, which represents an Alfa Romeo passenger car.

Positions 4-8: vehicle-specific information

Digit positions 4 to 8 of your VIN are the attributes of the vehicle. This includes vehicle-specific information such as the body type, engine type, transmission specifications, and safety features. These digits are important for narrowing down which Alfa Romeo model and trim you’re driving.

Position 9: the VIN check digit

Digit position 9 is the check digit of the VIN. All the numbers in the VIN are put through a complex series of calculations to produce this number. This digit is important as it verifies the authenticity of the VIN and makes it more difficult for counterfeit numbers to be created.

Position 10: model year

VINs can have the same digits that already refer to the same model in different years. The tenth digit is used to identify which year the car was produced. In addition to the letters I, O, and Q, the letters U, Z, and 0 are also not found in this position.
Here’s how the VIN model year codes for the last twenty years break down:

Position 11: assembly plant

Digit position 11 identifies the factory where your Alfa Romeo was assembled. The set codes for the factories will follow the automaker’s system. Alfa Romeo's production facilities are all in Italy.

Positions 12-17: vehicle serial number

The last 6 digits of VINs are the car’s serial number. This is often the production sequence number and is unique to your car. In most cases, this number doesn’t give much information, unless you are trying to figure out the exact date your car was manufactured.
