2019 Ford Escape engine oil capacity

Your 2019 Ford Escape engine oil capacity will depend on what kind of engine yours has—and the Escape comes with several different engine options.
There are a few ways to find that out: by checking your owner’s manual, your vehicle registration documents, your driver’s side door jamb label, or the information on the engine itself.
Once you know your engine type, you can look up the correct capacity in your owner’s manual.
The 2019 Ford Escape’s 1.5L EcoBoost engine has an oil capacity of 4.3 quarts, or 4.1 liters, and both the 2.0L and 2.5L EcoBoost engines have a capacity of 5.7 quarts, or 5.4 liters.

What kind of oil does a 2019 Ford Escape need?

If your 2019 Ford Escape’s engine is a 1.5L EcoBoost or a 2.5L EcoBoost, it requires SAE 5W-20 premium synthetic blend motor oil. The 2.0L EcoBoost, however, requires SAE 5W-30 engine oil.
Using the first type as an example, here’s what that means. The “5” refers to the engine oil’s viscosity or thickness at colder temperatures at startup, while the “20” refers to its viscosity when the engine reaches its piping hot operating temperatures—around 212°F. “SAE” is short for the Society of Automotive Engineers, which oversees oil viscosity grading.
Ford recommends opting for Motorcraft as a first choice, but what’s most important is that you’re picking a motor oil with the correct viscosity and an American Petroleum Institute (API) certification seal.

How often to change oil on a 2019 Ford Escape

Now that you know what kind of engine oil your 2019 Ford Escape needs and how much, when do you need to change it?
Ford recommends changing conventional oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles or every six months. If you’re using a full synthetic oil, you can go even longer between oil changes—about 7,500 to 10,000 miles.
However, when you actually need to change the oil can vary. For example, if your 2019 Ford Escape has been experiencing rougher driving conditions, you might need to change your engine oil sooner than you otherwise would.
That’s why periodically monitoring your engine oil is a good idea. Common recommendations from experts include checking your oil monthly or whenever you're refueling
These are a few signs you might notice if your 2019 Ford Escape is due for an oil change:
  • Dark brown or black motor oil (fresh engine oil is light brown in color)
  • Engine oil has a grainy texture
  • The engine is making strange new noises
  • Smells like oil, burning, or smoke coming from the engine
  • Worsened engine performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Once it’s time for your 2019 Ford Escape to get an oil change, you’ll need some
essential car tools and supplies
on hand. That will include:
  • A socket wrench
  • An oil filter wrench (tool used for removing oil filters)
  • New oil filter
  • Fresh engine oil
  • New washer for your drain bolt
  • Drain pan
  • Towel(s) for cleaning up
Before getting started, you’ll also want to know where you can properly dispose of your used engine oil—it’s a hazardous material, so you can’t just dump it out or throw it away with your regular trash. Most cities will have drop-off locations to recycle engine oil, as do some auto shops and dealerships.
Once you’ve sorted that out, you’re ready to get started! Here are the general steps involved with changing your engine oil:
  • Start your engine and let it run for just a few minutes—this will let your engine oil warm up and make it easier to drain—then turn it off again
  • Remove the oil fill cap under your Escape’s hood
  • Underneath your vehicle, remove the drain bolt and washer and allow the oil to empty into the drain pan
  • As the oil continues to drain, you can remove the old oil filter and replace it with your new one
  • When the oil finishes draining, replace the drain bolt using a new washer
  • Add the new engine oil to the proper fill level and replace the cap
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Once you’re finished, let your engine run for a few minutes to allow the engine oil to circulate. Then, after the engine cools, you can check the oil level one last time, topping it off if you need to.
