How do you clean a fuel rail?
I’m trying to save money on my car’s maintenance, so I want to see if it’s possible to clean a fuel rail at home. Can you tell me how to clean a fuel rail?

Here’s a step-by-step guide for how to clean a fuel rail:
- Purchase a fuel injector cleaning set that fits your vehicle’s make and model. These kits can easily be found online or at your local auto parts shop.
- Identify where the fuel rails are on your car by referencing the owner’s manual
- Disconnect the fuel rails by pressing down on the clamps to lift them off. Or, some fuel rails are removed by using a screwdriver to loosen the clamps holding them in place.
- Disconnect the fuel regulator pressure line (if your vehicle has one).
- Pour the solvent into the fuel injector cleaning kit, and hang the filled cleaning kit on the hood.
- Prevent the build-up of excess pressure by removing the fuel tank cover.
- Shut off the fuel pump by removing the fuel pump relay (this piece is located in the fuse box).
- Grab your air compressor and attach it to the fuel injector cleaning kit—set it to 40, 45, or 50 PSI.
- Turn the car on and let it idle until all the solvent in the cleaning kit is gone—this should only take a few minutes.
- Remove the cleaning kit and reattach the fuel pump, fuel rails, and fuel tank cover.
- Turn your car on to double-check your work! If you have leaks or hear strange noises, a part may have been reinstalled incorrectly.
