background
The 2018 Honda CR-V comes equipped with either a standard or turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, but keeping it running well requires the right kind of oil. Your CR-V’s oil capacity is 3.7 quarts if you have the 1.5-liter engine and 4.7 quarts if you have the 2.4-liter engine.
When it comes to vehicle maintenance, most of us know to keep the oil fresh and the tank full of fuel. But knowing exactly what kind of oil to use and how much of it to use can be confusing without an owner’s manual at hand.
Whether you’ve lost your owner’s manual or want to know how engine maintenance can extend your CR-V’s life,

2018 Honda CR-V engine oil capacity

The 2018 Honda CR-V comes equipped with either a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine or a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. The CR-V’s oil capacity is 3.7 quarts if you have the 1.5-liter engine or 4.7 quarts if you have the 2.4-liter engine.

What kind of oil does a 2018 Honda CR-V need?

Making sure you keep the right amount of oil in your car is important, but so is making sure you keep the right kind of oil in it. Honda recommends drivers use SAE 0W-20 Honda Genuine Motor Oil in their cars, regardless of engine size.
Honda Genuine Motor Oil is a synthetic blend, so if you’re unable to find this particular brand, it's important that you use synthetic over conventional oil, provided it meets the 0W-20 grade. Since your CR-V’s engine was developed to operate at peak efficiency with synthetic oils, you should avoid conventional oil. You may pay a little more to change your CR-V’s oil now, but you’ll save money on repairs in the long run.

How often to change the oil on a 2018 Honda CR-V

Knowing when to
change your oil and filter
is just as important as knowing what type of oil to put in your vehicle and how much.
As you’re driving between oil change intervals, be sure to check your engine oil levels regularly—at least once a month—and top off if you see your CR-V is running low. To check your oil level, follow these steps:
  • Remove the dipstick.
  • Wipe the dipstick on a rag.
  • Reinsert the dipstick without screwing it in.
  • Check that the oil level registers between the upper and lower limits marked on the dipstick.

How to change your oil

Now for the big question—how do you change your oil? It’s actually quite a bit easier than you might think, but before you get started, you should gather the following tools:
  • 4-5 quarts of 0W-20 oil (depending on which engine you have) and replacement filter
  • A drain pan
  • A socket wrench
  • A filter wrench
  • A rag
When you change your oil, you’ll want to ensure your engine is warm. If you’ve been out driving, let it cool just to a temperature that allows you to handle things without burning yourself. If the car has been sitting, let it run for about 5 minutes to warm up.
Once your car is warm, it’s time to
open the hood of your car
and get to work:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Get underneath the engine and remove the oil drain bolt and washer, draining the old oil into the drain pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and continue to let the oil drain
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary. Don't forget to make sure that the
oil pressure light
is off on your car's dashboard!
Now that you’re finished changing your oil, be sure to clean up the used oil properly by pouring it into a plastic or metal container with a tightly-sealed lid and taking it to a recycling center. Pro Tip: Do NOT dump the oil on the ground or put it in the garbage. This is not only terrible for the environment but it’s also illegal in most states.
