2015 Jeep Cherokee engine oil capacity

Before you
change your oil
, you’ll need to know an important piece of information: how much engine oil does a 2015 Jeep Cherokee need?
The refined 2.4L V-6 engine that powers your 2015 Cherokee has an oil capacity of 5.5 quarts, or 5.2 liters. Just be careful not to mix up your engine oil capacity—i.e., the amount of oil you'll need to complete an oil change- with your engine displacement.
Engine displacement refers to the 2.4-liter volume its four cylinders take up. These two engine volumes cannot be used interchangeably, so ensure you have the right number before you open your hood.

What kind of oil does a 2015 Jeep Cherokee need?

In addition to knowing the amount of oil you need, you’ll also need to find out what type of oil is compatible with your vehicle.
As per Jeep’s recommendation, look for SAE 0W-20 fully synthetic motor oil. While it’s helpful to know what to look for, understanding the oil grade you’re buying will ensure you find the right one, so let’s break down what it all means.
The numbers in the oil grade refer to how viscous or thick the oil is, while the “W” stands for winter. In other words, the 0 right before the “W” indicates that the oil will have a low viscosity at colder temperatures. The 20, on the other hand, indicates that the oil will stay relatively thin in hot temperatures as well. Synthetic oil provides overall engine protection and allows you to drive more miles between oil changes.

How often to change oil on a 2015 Jeep Cherokee

Now that you know all there is to know about Jeep Cherokee oil capacity and type, you’re ready to change your oil.
So how do you know when it’s time for an oil change? If you’re using conventional oil, Jeep recommends changing your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. If you don’t drive your vehicle very often, you can probably wait a good six months between oil changes.
However, if you’ve followed Jeep’s recommendations to use a synthetic oil, your oil change intervals will be a lot longer. In general, you can let 7,500 to 10,000 miles go by before you need to swap out your oil.
While these benchmarks are helpful, it doesn’t hurt to check your oil level on a regular basis to ensure your oil is clean and functional. While you’re examining your oil, you can look out for the following signs that your oil needs to be changed:
  • Motor oil is dark in color and appears gritty
  • Unfamiliar noises while you’re driving
  • Burning or
    oil smells
    coming from the engine
  • Changes in how your vehicle’s running or performing

How to change your oil and oil filter

Once you’ve hit that mileage benchmark, it’s time to get your hands dirty. Before you get started, ensure you’re prepared with a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench. Don’t forget to have a replacement filter and six quarts of 0W-20 fully synthetic motor oil.
Let your engine run until it reaches a normal operating temperature. This should take no more than five minutes, after which you can turn off the engine and pop the hood. Follow these steps to change your oil:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer from underneath the engine
  • Allow the oil to drain into the drain pain
  • Remove the old oil filter while the oil continues to drain
  • Install the new filter
  • With a new washer, replace the oil drain bolt and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with your fresh oil and replace the fill cap
  • Using a dipstick, ensure you’ve added the right amount of oil to your engine
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Once you’ve completed all the steps, let your Jeep run for a few minutes and keep your eyes out for any leaks. If you’ve changed your oil correctly, your dashboard’s
oil pressure light
should turn off.
Finally, avoid dumping the old oil on the ground or in the garbage. Rather, put the oil into the container and bring it to a recycling center to properly dispose of it.
