How to change your oil and oil filter
Once you’ve determined that an oil change is necessary, you’ll need to gather the following tools: a socket wrench, an oil drain pan, and a filter wrench designed to uninstall the dirty filter. It goes without saying that you’ll also need to purchase a new oil filter and 4 quarts of premium-grade synthetic 0W-20 motor oil.
Now that you have the necessary tools, start your car and let it idle for a few minutes until it reaches the proper operating temperature—this should take roughly four to five minutes when temperatures are average. After the engine has warmed up, turn it off, pop the hood, and do the following:
- Unscrew the oil cap and remove it.
- Position your oil drain pan underneath the oil reservoir’s drain hole. Use a socket wrench to remove the drain bolt and washer. Allow the oil to drain into the pan below.
- While you wait for the oil to finish draining, remove the old filter with the filter wrench.
- Replace the new old oil filter with a new one.
- Reinstall the drain bolt and a new washer.
- Fill up your engine with new motor oil. Screw the oil cap back into place.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary. Check with a dipstick to see if you added enough oil.
If you find that the oil level is adequate, allow your vehicle to idle for a few minutes and then check for leaks. If everything was done correctly, your dashboard's oil pressure light should turn off.
Lastly, you’ll need to dispose of the old oil. Pour the oil from the drain pan into some sort of sealable container and drive to the closest recycling center—never empty it into a garbage can or onto the ground.
