2017 Kia Sorento engine oil capacity

Let’s start with the question on everyone's mind: how much engine oil does a 2017 Kia Sorento require? It depends on what engine you have under your hood.
If your 2017 Kia Sorento’s equipped with either a 2.4-liter four-cylinder or 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, then you’ll have an engine oil capacity of 5.07 quarts or 4.8 liters
But if you’ve opted for the 3.3-liter V6 in your midsize SUV, your oil capacity increases to 6.02 quarts or 5.7 liters

What kind of oil does a 2017 Kia Sorento need?

While the Sorento offers three different engines, Kia recommends you use an SAE 5W-30 oil, like
Mobil 1 advanced full synthetic 5W-30 motor oil
, for each engine in the 2017 model.
So what does 5W-30 mean exactly? The numbers refer to the oil’s viscosity or thickness, while the “W” simply stands for winter. The number 5 tells us the oil’s viscosity at cold temperatures and the number 30 tells us its viscosity once the engine reaches a normal operating temperature.
SAE, or Society of Automotive Engineers, is a professional organization that codes oil viscosity.
You’ll need motor oil with these exact ratings so your Kia Sorento can perform well—even under the harshest cold weather conditions.

How often to change oil on a 2017 Kia Sorento

Now that you know your Kia Sorento’s oil capacity and type, you’re ready to
change your oil
Kia recommends changing your synthetic oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. But if you’re using conventional oil, you can change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, or every six months, instead.
With that said, depending on how much stress your engine is under every day, you might need to change your oil more frequently. It’s always a good idea to check your oil level on a regular basis and keep an eye out for the following signs that suggest you’ll need an oil change soon:
  • Engine oil that turns dark brown or black. Clean oil is noticeably light brown.
  • Engine oil that feels coarse or gritty.
  • Unusual sounds coming from the engine.
  • Strange odors that start to smell like burning oil or smoke.
  • Poor performance power.

How to change your oil and oil filter

So you’re finally ready to change the oil on your 2017 Kia Sorento? Then gather the following materials to get the job done, including the following:
  • Drain pan
  • Filter wrench
  • Socket wrench
  • Replacement filter
  • Five or six quarts of SAE 5W-30 oil
First off, you’ll want to run the engine until it reaches a normal operating temperature. If the weather is pleasant enough, this process shouldn’t take longer than five minutes. Once your engine reaches the appropriate operating temperature, turn it off, and follow these steps:
  • Open the hood and remove the oil fill cap.
  • Once you’re under the engine, take off the oil drain bolt and washer in order to drain the old oil into the drain pan.
  • Unscrew the old oil filter and replace it with a new one while you continue to allow the old oil to drain.
  • Once the old oil is finished draining, replace the oil drain bolt with a new washer.
  • Add new oil to your engine and replace the fill cap.
Once you’ve completed these steps, you can turn your Sorento back on and let it warm up for 30 seconds or so, this will allow the new oil to fill the filter. If you want to make sure you’ve used enough oil, just check your dipstick and top it off if there’s still not enough.
Afterward, let your SUV run for a couple of minutes, and keep an eye out for leaks. You’ll know you’ve successfully changed out your oil if the
oil pressure light
on your dashboard turns off!
And don’t forget about cleaning up once you’re done—you’ll need to place your dirty oil in a sealed container and take it to your local recycling center. Do not dump it out!
