2016 Kia Sorento engine oil capacity

The 2016 Kia Sorento has an engine oil capacity of 5 or 6 quarts depending on what's under the hood. Once you’ve emptied out your old oil, this is the total amount of fresh engine oil you can pour into your Kia.
The 2016 Kia Sorento has three engine options—the standard 2.4 L 4-cylinder, a 3.3 L V6, and a turbocharged 2.0 L 4-cylinder. For the 2.0L and 2.4L engines, the oil capacity it 5 quarts, while the oil capacity for the 3.3L engine is 6 quarts. Note that the number at the start of the engine name indicates the engine displacement, not the engine oil capacity.
Engine displacement is the volume of the engine’s cylinders. This should not be confused with the Kia’s engine oil capacity as these two numbers are not interchangeable.

What kind of oil does a 2016 Kia Sorento need?

With many different types and brands of engine oil available, it’s important to fill your 2016 Kia Sorento with the kind of engine oil recommended by Kia. This will keep your engine as healthy as possible.
For the 2016 Kia Sorento, the owner’s manual recommends using 5W-30 full-synthetic motor oil. Cars with synthetic motor oil can go longer between oil changes, but the oil itself is more expensive.
You may be wondering, what do all those numbers mean? They indicate the viscosity, or thickness, of the motor oil at certain temperatures. The first number, next to the W (which stands for ‘winter’), indicates the viscosity at cold temperatures. The second number is the viscosity at your engine’s regular operating temperature—somewhere around 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

How often to change oil on a 2016 Kia Sorento

The next question is how often you’ll need to change the oil on your 2016 Kia Sorento. Since the 2016 Kia Sorento uses synthetic oil, you should change your oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. This is longer between changes than a car with conventional oil.
There are some things that indicate when it’s time to change your oil regardless of when your last oil change was. Look out for the following signs that it is time for an oil change:
  • Motor oil that needs changing is dark brown or black (Clean oil is light brown or amber, like a cup of tea. Dirty oil is like a cup of soda.)
  • Motor oil feels coarse or gritty
  • Unfamiliar noises
    coming from the engine
  • New smells, especially anything that smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

With the above information, you’re ready to change your engine oil at home. You should change your oil filter, which helps keep your engine oil clean while it circulates, at the same time.
For this job, you’re going to need the following equipment: a fresh bottle of engine oil, a new oil filter,a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench.
First, run your car for a few minutes. You want it warm, so the oil flows more easily, but not so hot that it is dangerous to work on your engine. Next, turn your car off and pop the hood. It’s time to change your oil:
  • Remove the oil fill cap. If you can’t get it off once the oil is drained, your car is stuck
  • Place the drain pan underneath the drain bolt
  • Remove the drain bolt and let your oil drain
  • Replace your old oil filter with your new oil filter
  • Once the oil is drained, reinstall the drain bolt using a new washer
  • Pour in 5 (or 6) quarts of engine oil
  • Replace the fill cap and close the hood
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Once you’ve finished, take a moment to run your engine in order to check for leaks or dashboard lights.
There’s only one step left—responsibly disposing of your old engine oil. Pour it into a sealable container and bring it to your local recycling plant.
