Why is my 2017 Honda Accord backup camera not working?

Problems involving the backup camera are not
common Honda problems
for the 2017 Accord. Like any electric device, however, it can develop faults from physical damage, software bugs, or incorrect settings.
Before you take your Honda to either a mechanic or a certified dealership, it’s worth having a look at the issue yourself—there’s a decent chance you may be able to fix it from home!

Common backup camera issues for the 2017 Honda Accord

If you have an issue with your backup camera, it will manifest in one of three ways: the camera will not turn on or displays a black screen, the camera has a blurry or foggy display, or the camera is always on and will not shut off
Let’s take a look at these symptoms and the possible causes behind each one.

The backup camera has gone black

This is the most common problem that Honda owners experience with their cameras. When the camera ought to engage, it simply doesn’t or does but displays a black screen. There are a few different reasons why this might happen:
  • You have a blown fuse. This issue accounts for the vast majority of 2017 Accord camera troubles. Luckily, it’s very easy to
    replace a blown automtive fuse
. Located the fuse box along the inside of the engine bay, near the front. Open the box and locate the blown fuse. Switch it out for a replacement fuse of the same type (they usually cost $10-$30).
  • Incorrect settings. Next, check your settings. It may be that the brightness setting is simply too low.
  • Faulty wiring. If replacing the fuse doesn’t help (or if none of the fuses were burnt) and all your settings are correct, then you may have faulty wiring somewhere. To resolve this issue, you’ll need to hire an automotive mechanic.
  • Outdated Software. Like any computer system, your Honda’s electric components need periodic software updates. Unfortunately, the Accord is not one of the models where you can update the software yourself. You’ll need to take it to a certified Honda dealership to have it done for you.
If you’ve checked for all the issues listed above, and there is still no display for the camera, it may just be that your camera is damaged, broken, or has a manufacturing defect. In which case, it needs to be replaced.

The backup camera is foggy

A blurry/foggy backup camera is most likely caused by a dirty lens. Gently wipe the lens clean to resolve the issue.
If it’s still blurry, even after a thorough cleaning, it could be caused by a blown fuse—just like a black display can be. Check the fuse box and replace any blown fuses. If all else fails, you can take your Accord in and have the camera replaced.

The backup camera is continuously on

If your backup camera works fine but will not shut off, there are two possible causes. You either inadvertently activated the always-on setting or you have a software issue.
First, check the settings. The easiest way to do this is by simply restarting your Honda—the always-on setting is designed to turn off whenever the car is restarted. Shut the car off completely and then start it back up.
If the camera is still on, then you have a software problem. Head to your nearest Honda-certified dealership for help as you probably just need a system update.
