Rogue’s oil.

2016 Nissan Rogue engine oil capacity

First and foremost, let’s answer the most prevalent question: how much engine oil does the 2016 Nissan Rogue need?
The 2016 Rogue’s 2.5-liter V4 engine has an oil capacity of 4.8 quarts or 4.6 liters. The 2.5-liter volume refers to your engine’s displacement and should not be confused with the engine’s oil capacity. These numbers serve different purposes, so you must understand the difference.
Displacement is the total volume of air and fuel an engine can draw in one cylinder of the engine. Oil capacity, on the other hand, is how much motor oil your engine holds to properly keep it lubricated and cool.

What kind of oil does a 2016 Nissan Rogue need?

Now that we’ve covered how much oil your Rogue needs, let’s discuss the oil type you’ll be filling it up with. When you go shopping for oil, the shelves will be stocked with a ton of different options, but you should look for SAE 0W-20 oil, which is the type of oil that Nissan recommends. Following their recommendation will keep your vehicle running at its best.
The numbers and letters tell you how the oil will perform under different weather circumstances. The “W” stands for winter, and the 0 in front of it tells us that oil will flow incredibly fast, even under extremely cold conditions. The 20 refers to the oil’s viscosity (thickness) and denotes this is a thin oil that will reduce friction in the engine.
Basically, you want a blend that will flow easily during a cold weather start-up and one that is thin enough to reduce wear and tear on the engine at operating temperatures. Fully synthetic oil is also approved by Nissan, just make sure it has the same characteristics as the recommended blend.
If you want to use Nissan’s recommendation, fill up with
Nissan Genuine
motor oil. However, if you are not able to find 0W-20 motor oil, the owner's manual recommends using 5W-20 motor oil as an alternative.

How often to change oil on a 2016 Nissan Rogue

Now that you’ve got a firm grasp on the 2016 Nissan Rogue oil capacity and type—it’s time to roll up those sleeves and change your oil.
Nissan advises changing the oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles with conventional oil. If you are a frequent driver, you will probably be changing your oil more often than the general six-month guideline.
If you’ve filled up with synthetic oil, however, you can allow more time and miles to pass in between oil changes. Synthetic oil should be changed every 7,500 to 10,000 miles according to experts.
Change your oil routinely to keep it running smoothly for years to come, so regularly monitor your oil level. Additionally, you can look out for these telltale signs that your Rogue needs an oil change:
  • Dark brown or black motor oil
  • Gritty or rough oil texture
  • Smokey or burning smells
  • Changes in your car’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Once you’re ready to change your oil, start by gathering the necessary materials, including a socket wrench, drain pan, filter wrench, a new replacement filter, and a rag. Last but not least, you’ll need five quarts of SAE 0W-20 engine oil.
The first step is to warm the engine up to operating temperature. Park your car on a level surface, and letting the engine run for a few minutes. After this temperature has been reached, turn the engine off, pop the hood, and follow the steps below:
  • Remove the oil cap and raise the dipstick at least one inch out of the well
  • Go underneath the engine on the passenger side and remove the oil drain plug and washer, allowing the old oil to drain into the pan
  • Remove the old
    oil filter
with the filter wrench and continue to let the oil drain
  • Clean the filter mounting surface and install the replacement filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt with a new washer and tighten to 22-29 lb-ft of torque
  • Refill the engine with the new oil and replace your fill cap
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
After you’re done, use your dipstick to confirm that you added the correct amount of oil. Once that checks out, run your Rogue for a little while and check for any leaks. If all is correct, the oil pressure light on your dashboard will turn off.
Let’s not forget about the clean-up. Don’t dump the dirty oil on the ground or dispose of it in your garbage bin. The best practice is to put the old oil in a sealed container and bring it to a recycling center.
