2021 Nissan Rogue engine oil capacity

Before you start rolling up those sleeves, let’s discuss exactly how much oil a 2021 Nissan Rogue requires.
This SUV comes equipped with a 2.5-liter V4 engine with an oil capacity of 5.3 quarts. The 2.5-liter part of the engine represents the engine’s displacement—not the oil capacity. Let’s go over the distinction to avoid any future maintenance issues.
Displacement refers to the total volume of air and fuel that is swept into each engine cylinder, while the oil capacity is the proper amount of oil needed to keep the engine running smoothly. Understanding this difference can prevent you from severely under-filling your engine during an oil change.

What kind of oil does a 2021 Nissan Rogue need?

Now that you have a better grasp on the oil capacity, let’s discuss the best oil type for your Rogue.
Whether you go shopping in a store or online, you will be bombarded with a plethora of different oil types for sale. Don’t panic, we have the oil type you should be keeping an eye out for: SAE 0W-20. This is the oil type recommended by Nissan, and nobody knows the vehicle quite like the manufacturer does.
Let’s review what this oil grade means so you know exactly what you are putting in your new truck. The “W” stands for winter, and the 0 in front of it tells us this blend flows well even under cold conditions. The 20 after the “W” denotes a moderate viscosity (thickness) when the engine is at its hot normal operating temperature
At its most basic, the best oil for a 2021 Rogue is thin enough to flow freely during those cold morning start-ups but remains thick enough to keep the engine cool and lubricated while it's running.
  • Nissan recommended: If you’re looking for the manufacturer’s recommendation, their original
    0W-20 engine oil

How often to change oil on a 2021 Nissan Rogue

In order to keep your engine running like new, Nissan advises you to change your Rogue’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
Monitoring your oil level regularly and keeping record of previous oil changes can ensure you never go too long without adding fresh oil. If you don’t drive often or you keep your car’s mileage to a minimum, you should still change your oil every six months to prevent it from becoming sludge.
You can also be on the lookout for these signs that your Murano is ready for an oil change:
  • The oil color has changed to dark brown or black
  • The oil texture is coarse or gritty
  • You hear strange engine sounds
  • There are burning odors coming from the engine
  • You notice changes in your car’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

And now the moment we’ve all been waiting for! Before you dive under the car, you’ll want to begin by collecting the following materials: socket wrench, drain pan, filter wrench, replacement filter, and a rag. Last but not least, you’ll need a bottle of 0W-20 engine oil.
Start by warming up the engine to get the current oil flowing. After a few minutes, turn off the engine, pop the hood, and follow these steps:
  • Position yourself underneath the engine and set your drain pan under your oil drain plug.
  • Use your socket wrench to remove the oil plug, and let the oil drain out.
  • Locate your oil filter and unscrew it with your filter wrench so the excess oil drains out.
  • Clean the filter mounting surface with your rag and screw in your new filter.
  • Replace the oil drain plug.
  • Go to the top of the engine and refill it with the proper amount of oil.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
That’s all there is to it—not so bad, right? Measure your new oil level with your dipstick to confirm you have filled the proper amount, then check that your oil pressure dashboard light is off. Lastly, turn on the engine and confirm there aren’t any leaks.
As for cleanup, you should never pour the old, contaminated oil on the ground or into your garbage bin. Best practice is to pour it into a sealable container and bring it to your local recycling center for safe disposal.
