2016 Jeep Wrangler 3.6 engine oil capacity

How much oil does a 2016 Jeep Wrangler 3.6 need, anyway? The 2016 Jeep Wrangler 3.6 has an engine oil capacity of 6 quarts, or 5.6 liters.
Packing a whopping 280 horsepower, your Wrangler’s engine needs to be properly lubricated so it doesn't grind itself up. Regular oil maintenance with the right kind of oil for your engine will extend the life of your car.

What kind of oil does a 2016 Jeep Wrangler 3.6 need?

Much like every engine, every engine oil type is different. It’s important to find the right kind of oil for your car.
For the 2016 Wrangler 3.6, Jeep recommends you use SAE 5W-20 synthetic motor oil. It’s a good idea to stick to the owner manual’s recommendation when performing DIY maintenance at home.
Oil ratings can be a bit confusing, so let’s break down the numbers in SAE 5W-20.
First off, SAE just means the oil is rated by the Society of Automotive Engineers. Oils are rated based on their viscosity (resistance to flow) at different temperatures. The goal is for the oil to maintain its low viscosity in both hot and cold climates.
The number before the “W” stands for winter, referring to the oil’s viscosity in winter temperatures. The second number is the oil’s rating in the heat of your engine. With a rating of 5W-20, this oil maintains its thinness in both hot and cold temperatures.
The owner's manual specifically recommends Mopar, Pennzoil, and Shell Helix brands, but any SAE 5W-20 synthetic motor oil will work in your Jeep Wrangler.

How often to change oil on a 2016 Jeep Wrangler 3.6

As a rule of thumb, you should aim to change your oil every 3 years or 3,000-5,000 miles, whichever comes first. If you don’t drive often, you should check every 6 months, as oil will degrade in your engine over time no matter how often you drive.
If you’re using fully synthetic oil, you can probably wait a little longer to change your oil. Experts recommend changing synthetic oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles
But a lot can happen to your car in between oil changes. You may have to change your oil early if you experience any of the following symptoms in your car.
  • Change in the oil’s color from red to dark brown or black
  • A coarse or gritty texture in the motor oil
  • Unfamiliar noises
coming from the engine, like screeching or squeaking
  • New smells, especially anything like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

Now that you’re an expert on your car’s motor oil needs, it’s time for an oil change!
Before you start, you’ll need a few materials. Grab a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench to remove the old oil filter. You’ll also need a replacement filter and a jug of 5W-20 engine oil
Your first step is to run the engine for a while to get it up to operating temperature. In normal weather conditions, this should only take a few minutes. Once you’re there, turn off your engine, open the hood, and follow these easy steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Get under your engine and remove the oil drain bolt and washer, allowing the old oil to drain into the drain pan
  • Remove the old
    oil filter
and let the oil drain some more
  • Replace it with the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap, checking the oil level with your dipstick to make sure you’ve added enough
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
You’ve changed your oil! Your last step is to clean up. Remember: do not dump your old oil on the ground or in a garbage can. Make sure you seal it in a tight container and bring it to a local recycling facility.
