2016 Ford F150 5.0 engine oil capacity

So, what is the total engine oil capacity of the 2016 Ford F150 5.0? Let’s start there.
The 2016 F150 5.0 can hold a maximum of 7.7 quarts of motor oil. Note that this is not the same thing as your engine displacement, or the volume your engine’s cylinders take up.

What kind of oil does a 2016 Ford F150 5.0 take?

Now that you know how much oil your F150 needs, you'll need to figure out exactly what kind of oil is compatible with its engine. Not all motor oils are the same, and using the wrong type could have disastrous consequences for your Ford (including voiding your warranty!).
The most important characteristic that differentiates one type of oil from the next is its viscosity, or thickness. Different engines need oils with different viscosity levels. The 2016 F150 is compatible with SAE 5W-20 oil. Specifically, the owner's manual recommends using Motorcraft® SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil.
Viscosity levels will always be described as one number followed by a “W”, then a hyphen, and then a second number. The first number describes the oil’s viscosity level at 0°F. The second number describes the oil’s viscosity at 212°F

As long as you continue to use a fully synthetic oil product, you should only need to change your motor oil every 7,500-10,000 miles. If you’re using traditional oil, you'll need to change it far more often—every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
Many vehicle owners find it difficult to remember to change their oil on time just based on mileage. For that reason, changing your oil every six months is often recommended.
But sometimes, you’ll need to change your oil ahead of schedule for one reason or another. It’s generally recommended that you check your oil once a month or every other time you fill up your gas tank. Look for the following warning signs that it’s time for new oil:
  • The oil has changed color from light brown or amber to dark brown or black.
  • The oil has visible debris or contaminants in it.
  • The oil feels coarse or gritty when you rub it between your fingers.
  • New or
    unfamiliar noises
    are coming from your engine.
  • It smells like oil, smoke, or something burning.
  • Your vehicle’s performance declines.

How to change your oil and oil filter

When the time does come for an oil change, you'll need to make sure that you have a few basic materials. You'll need eight quarts of fresh motor oil, a fresh oil filter, a filter wrench, a drain pan, and a socket wrench.
When you have those things handy, just follow these steps to change the oil in your 2016 Ford F150 5.0:
  • Start your engine and run it for a few minutes until it reaches normal operating temperature. This should take about 5 minutes.
  • Once the engine has reached the correct temperature, shut it off and pull the hood release latch. Open the hood.
  • Locate and remove the oil fill cap.
  • Lower yourself underneath the engine bay so you are facing up towards the underside of the engine. From there, locate the oil drain bolt
  • Remove the oil drain bolt. The oil will begin pouring out immediately, so make sure the drain pan is properly positioned first.
  • While the oil is draining, use your filter wrench to remove the old oil filter. Then, allow the rest of the oil to drain out.
  • Once the old oil is completely drained, install the new oil filter and replace the oil drain bolt—make sure to secure it tightly.
  • Refill the engine's oil reservoir with new oil.
For good measure, use the dipstick to double-check that you have added the correct amount of oil. After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Then, start the engine one more time and again allow it to run for a few minutes—just to make sure there aren't any leaks.
Once you have finished, carefully clean up, store the old oil in a sealable container, and take it to a nearby recycling center. Never dump the old oil on the ground or throw it out with your normal garbage.
