2015 Ford F150 5.0L engine oil capacity

Before you can actually change your oil, however, you’ll need to know what your 2015 Ford F150 5.0L’s oil capacity is—this way you’ll know how much oil to buy and won’t have to make two trips.
The V8 engine in a 2015 Ford F150 5.0L has an oil capacity of exactly 7.7 quarts or roughly 7.3 liters. Oil capacity is not to be confused with your engine’s displacement, or the 5.0 liters occupied by the engine’s cylinders—the two figures are not interchangeable and should not be treated as such. Oil capacity only ever refers to the amount of oil necessary for each oil change.
Disclaimer: Online, the 2015 Ford F150 5.0L’s oil capacity is often misrepresented as 6.3 quarts, but this will not be enough to fill up your oil reservoir completely. Your owner’s manual should list the required amount as 7.7 quarts, so it is best to defer to that in the case of discrepancies.

What kind of oil does a 2015 Ford F150 5.0L need?

Alright—now that you know how much oil you’ll need for the 2015 Ford F150 5.0L, you’ll need to figure out what kind of oil to buy. If you follow the manufacturer’s recommendations listed in your owner’s manual, you’ll see that the F150 5.0L requires synthetic 5W-20 motor oil.

How often to change oil on a 2015 Ford F150 5.0L

Ford recommends that you replace your 2015 Ford F150 5.0L’s oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. Keep in mind, however, that this is based on normal driving conditions and habits—you may need to change your oil more frequently if you regularly drive on dusty or sandy roads, routinely make short trips, or make a habit out of towing heavy loads.
Of course, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check your oil before reaching these intervals—in fact, it's advised that you do so at least once a month to prevent potential engine damage. You’ll also want to keep an eye out for the following signs indicating an oil change will be needed sooner rather than later:
  • The motor oil feels gritty when you rub it between your fingers
  • Color has changed from light amber to dark brown or black
  • Your vehicle’s performance wanes
  • An oily, smoky, or burning smell coming from the engine
  • Abnormal or
    loud engine noise

How to change your oil and oil filter

When you've decided it's time to change the oil, gather the following tools: a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench for removing the old oil filter. Of course, you'll also require 8 quarts of synthetic 5W-20 motor oil and a replacement filter.
Now that you have everything you need, start your truck and let it run for a while until it reaches the proper operating temperature—this shouldn't take more than five minutes unless it’s winter. When the engine has reached operating temperature, turn it off, open the hood, and follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil cap.
  • Position an oil drain pan underneath the drain hole. Use a socket wrench to remove the drain bolt and washer. Allow the oil to drain into the pan below.
  • As you wait for the oil to drain completely, remove the old oil filter with the filter wrench.
  • Install the new oil filter.
  • Put the drain bolt back into place and install a new washer. Tighten to the manufacturer’s recommendation.
  • Fill up your engine with the new oil and then replace the cap.
After replacing the oil, check with a dipstick to see if enough oil was added. If the level is fine, run the engine for a few minutes and check for leaks.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary. As long as you did everything correctly, your dashboard's oil pressure light should turn off.
Lastly, it’s time to get rid of the used oil. Never dump the drain pan on the ground or into a trash can—instead, empty it into a sealable container and take it to your neighborhood recycling center.
