2014 Toyota RAV4 engine oil capacity

Knowing your engine oil capacity is crucial to correctly change your oil. Too much or too little oil circulating through your engine can cause serious damage.
The 2014 Toyota RAV4 has an engine oil capacity of 4.6 quarts or 4.4 liters.
If you’re looking at the engine specifications in the owner’s manual, you’ll see that the 2014 RAV uses a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine. Don’t confuse the 2.5-liter measurement for your oil capacity! The 2.5 liters refers to your engine’s displacement, which is the total volume your engine’s cylinders take up. It isn’t related to your engine’s oil capacity.

What kind of oil does a 2014 Toyota RAV4 need?

Knowing how much motor oil your Toyota RAV4 needs is one thing—but it’s just as important to know what kind to use.
The 2014 Toyota RAV4 owner’s manual suggests 0W-20 motor oil as the required viscosity rating for oil that will be used in the vehicle. This rating tells you about the engine oil’s thickness at different temperatures, with lower numbers being thinner than higher ones.
The “0” here refers to the oil’s viscosity in colder temperatures and the “W” stands for “winter”. The “20” refers to the oil’s viscosity once it has reached normal engine operating temperatures.
Using the oil recommended by Toyota is important because it will help your RAV4 achieve its best fuel economy and will help the vehicle start more easily in cold weather. If you can’t find any 0W-20 oil in stock, 5W-20 can be used. Make sure you replace it with 0W-20 oil at your next oil change.
As for which brand to purchase, Toyota recommends Toyota Genuine Motor Oil. If you can’t find Toyota Genuine Motor oil, make sure your choice is of the correct viscosity and that it has an API certification seal (this tells you it meets required quality standards).

How often to change the oil in a 2014 Toyota RAV4

The 2014 Toyota RAV4’s maintenance guide recommends
changing your engine oil
every 5,000 miles
However, your oil change frequency will probably depend on your lifestyle. If you frequently drive in dusty environments, spend extended periods of time idling in traffic, or regularly push your RAV4’s performance capabilities to their maximum, your oil changes may need to be more frequent.
It’s a good idea to periodically check your engine oil to monitor its level and condition. Common recommendations include checking your engine oil with your dipstick monthly, or every other time you refuel.
If your 2014 Toyota RAV4 is due for an oil change, here are some signs you might notice:
  • The engine oil has turned brown or black (as opposed to a translucent light brown)
  • The engine oil now has a grainy or gritty texture
  • Worsening performance or
    gas mileage
  • Check engine light
, low oil pressure light, or other related indicator lights have turned on
  • Burning or oil scents coming from the engine

How to change your oil and oil filter

If you’ve decided to go the do-it-yourself route, you’ll need to gather some supplies. These should include:
  • A socket wrench
  • An oil filter wrench
  • Fresh engine oil
  • New washer for your drain bolt
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Gloves
  • Protective eyewear
Once you have everything you need, start by parking your vehicle on a flat surface and letting your engine run for a few minutes. This will allow the engine oil to heat up and make draining it faster.
Next, shut off your engine and prop the hood of your RAV4 open. Then, follow these steps:
  • At your RAV4’s hood, unscrew your oil fill cap
  • Underneath the vehicle, place your drain pan under the engine
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer, allowing the old engine oil to empty into the pan
  • Remove the oil filter and replace it with the new one by following the instructions on its package
  • Once the oil has finished draining, reinstall the drain bolt using a new washer
  • At the hood of your vehicle, add fresh engine oil up to the proper fill level
  • Replace the oil fill cap
Now, it’s time to check your work:
  • Let your engine run for a few minutes again, allowing the oil to circulate
  • Check for any leaks and make sure oil-related indicator lights are not longer on
  • Shut off your engine and let it cool
  • Use your dipstick to check your engine oil level again and adjust as needed
  • Recycle your used engine oil in a sealed container at a designated facility

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
