What causes the 2012 Nissan Rogue battery draining problem?

Owners of the 2012 Nissan Rogue tend to complain more about other issues, like transmission problems, rather than their battery draining. That said, as with any car, it is common for drivers to come back to their car after short periods to find that it won’t start.
There are a few causes that are mostly the cause of your drained battery, but to pin down the issue you will have to do some investigating
If you notice your battery is draining while it is parked, then there are a few likely offenders:
  • Faulty battery: There is a good chance that your battery itself is dying. Batteries typically last around 3-5 years, and so should be the first thing you look at.
  • Damaged battery cables
: Corrosion around the battery posts is a common issue. If you find a significant amount of corrosion you can use a wire brush and some battery post cleaners to clean the area.
  • Parasitic drain: This means that some electrical component continues to suck power after you’ve turned your vehicle off.
  • Alternator issues: Perhaps your alternator wasn’t sufficiently charging the battery while you were driving. This may have left the battery dead.
If you notice your Rogue’s battery is draining while driving, the issue is almost always with the alternator. Usually, you will see the battery or alternator repair light on, and if you hear a whining noise accompanying the problem then these further point to the alternator as the culprit.

How to fix the Nissan Rogue’s battery draining problem

In most cases, the easiest way to deal with a draining battery is to take your car to a trusted mechanic. Since the troubleshooting process can be a hassle, professional technicians have the tools, knowledge, and experience to make the process much more efficient. It will, however, take a while, so expect to leave your car at the shop for at least a few hours, if not a few days.
If there is a parasitic drain, you will have to find the source of the problem, then replace whatever part is responsible. This fix can be as cheap as replacing a fuse for $20 plus labor
If your Nissan Rogue is having alternator troubles, the fix can be a bit more complicated. If you have to replace the entire alternator, you can expect the cost to be between $600 and $750 including labor.
The most common solution, though, is to clean the battery posts or
replace the battery
. 2012 Nissan Rogues use a 35-2 battery. New batteries typically cost between $50 and $150 and replacing the battery is a relatively simple process:
  • Make sure the engine is off and locate your battery
  • Use a wrench to loosen the bolt that holds the negative cable
  • Remove the cable by gently twisting and pulling
  • Loosen and remove the positive cable
  • Locate the clamp that holds the battery in place and remove it with a wrench or ratchet
  • Remove the battery—be careful, it will be heavy
  • Clean the battery tray and cables of any corrosion or debris
  • Put the new battery in and repeat the steps above in reverse
