background
The 2004 Ford Explorer has a bolt pattern of 5x4.5 or 5 on 4.5. In other words, each wheel has five bolts or lugs that form a circle 4.5 inches in diameter.
Swapping out your current wheels for a new set can give your well-traveled SUV a fresh new look, improve your handling and performance, or simply keep it functional when wear and tear have taken their toll.
But to pick out a set that’s the right fit, you’ll need to know your Explorer’s bolt pattern. Learn what that means below—plus how you can measure the bolt pattern yourself.

2004 Ford Explorer bolt pattern

The 2004 Ford Explorer has a bolt pattern of 5x4.5 inches. What these numbers represent is pretty straightforward:
# of bolts x diameter of the circle they form
To put it another way, this means that on each wheel of the 2004 Ford Explorer, there are five bolts or lug nuts arranged in a circle with a diameter of 4.5 inches.
In addition to your bolt pattern, there are other measurements you’ll want to know for your Explorer while you’re wheel shopping:
  • Factory wheel size: 17” to 21”
  • Stud size: 1/2-20 (1/2 inch stud with 20 threads per inch)
  • Wheel offset: 20 to 35 mm
  • Center bore: 70.5 mm
Because wheel specs can vary slightly from vehicle to vehicle based on their model year, trim level, or other configurations, you’ll want to verify that these measurements match your own Explorer’s. Most wheel and tire shops will have tools allowing you to check whether a particular set of wheels or rims will be the right fit for your 2004 Explorer.

How to measure your Ford Explorer’s bolt pattern

If you want to verify your 2004 Ford Explorer’s bolt pattern, or if it slips your mind later, it takes hardly any time to measure it yourself. Here’s how to do it.
First, grab some measuring tape and pick any bolt hole on any wheel. From the outside edge of the bolt hole, measure to the center of a bolt on the opposite side. Since the Explorer has five bolts, you’ll technically end up between two of them if you were to measure directly across, but you can pick either bolt on either side of that point.
This measurement gives you your pitch circle diameter (PCD). Place it after the number of bolts on each wheel (five), and you have your 2004 Ford Explorer bolt pattern!
