2009 was a big year for the F-150, with the launch of the 12th generation of this iconic truck. It was fully redesigned, inspired by the Super Duty Series trucks. This release addressed some of the issues that had impacted the previous version, including making that grille just a bit more macho.
However, 2009 was a while ago now, so your truck may well need a few things changing up—not least the wheels, which can take quite a pounding if you’re testing the F-150’s off-road capabilities. If you want to treat your truck to new wheels, you’ll need to know the bolt pattern.
That’s where

2009 F-150 bolt pattern

You may still be wondering what on earth a bolt pattern is. Let’s clear that up for you now (it’s also called a lug pattern, but let’s not confuse things any more than we have to).
It’s the number of bolts multiplied by the diameter of the circle they form on the wheel
If you didn’t know that was a thing, don’t worry—you’re not alone. But it is important to know the bolt pattern, because otherwise, you risk buying wheels that won’t fit on your truck. Which would be embarrassing, annoying, and expensive.
The bolt pattern for the 2009 F-150 is 6x5.3 or 6 on 5.3. This means that your truck’s wheels have six lugs each, set in a circle 5.3 inches in diameter. See, it’s quite straightforward when you know what it all means.
Unfortunately, the bolt pattern isn’t the only thing you need to know about your wheels to upgrade them. You should also have an idea what the stud size, wheel offset, center bore measurement and torque specifications. But we’ve got your back (again), so here’s all of that in a handy list:
  • Factory wheel size: 17”/18”
  • Stud size: M14 x 2.0
  • Offset: 18 to 45 mm
  • Center bore: 87.1 mm
  • Wheel tightening torque: 204 Nm
You might have had another F-150 model in the past, but the wheels can vary from year to year. If you have a different model year, don’t make the mistake of assuming that these numbers or even the bolt pattern will automatically be the same—check the specifications for your truck

How to measure your Ford F-150’s bolt pattern

Of course, being told these measurements is one thing, but what if you want to be REALLY sure before buying those new wheels? Luckily it’s very easy to check your F-150’s bolt pattern yourself. All you need is a measuring tape or a ruler.
Simply measure from the outer edge of the lug hole of one of the bolts to the center of the opposite bolt. This is easy to do on the F-150. It has six bolts, so it’s quite obvious which bolt you should be measuring too (it’s less straightforward when there’s an odd number of bolts).
This gives you your diameter, so all you need to do is put it together with the number of bolts, and you’ve found your bolt pattern!

How to optimize your Ford’s insurance coverage

If you’ve had your 2009 F-150 since it first came out, you’ve possibly had the same insurance all that time too. So in addition to changing up the wheels on your truck, it might be time to change up your insurer.
