background
The 2004 Cadillac SRX 3.6L is a luxury crossover SUV and part of the first generation, which ended in 2009. With its V6 engine, it’s a great SUV to explore the open road. But, if you want to ensure it lasts for years to come, you’ll need to know its engine oil capacity.
A luxury vehicle is something many drivers strive to own in their lifetime. What many fail to realize is luxury vehicles often have higher costs for
car repairs
and additional maintenance. Combined with higher insurance rates, it may seem impossible to save on ownership costs.
Thankfully, changing your oil at home is an easy way to save on
car maintenance
costs. But, before you get started, you’ll need to check your owner’s manual for the recommended oil type and oil capacity for your car.
If you’re looking for a bit of guidance before jumping in,
Jerry
, the super app for
car insurance
, has put together a guide on the 2004 Cadillac SRX 3.6L oil capacity and how to change your oil. We've also thrown in a tip for how to reduce your
Cadillac SRX insurance costs
for good measure.

2004 Cadillac SRX 3.6L oil capacity

The most important question starting to change your 2004 Cadillac SRX 3.6L’s oil is how much do you need?
The 3.6L engine in your 2004 Cadillac has an oil capacity of 5.6 quarts or 5.3 liters. While it may seem confusing that your engine needs more oil than its size, a 3.6-liter engine refers to the volume the engine’s cylinders take up or its
engine displacement
. Oil capacity refers to the amount of engine oil your vehicle needs when changing the oil.

What kind of oil does a 2004 Cadillac SRX 3.6L need?

After learning how much oil you need, the next step is choosing the correct kind. There are a lot of options, and not every type of oil is the same. Luxury cars typically have specific requirements, so it’s important to follow the recommendations for your 2004 SRX.
GM recommends a full synthetic oil with a viscosity of 5W-30
If that’s confusing, the numbers refer to the oil’s viscosity or how thick the formula is. The “W” means winter. With a 5 in front of the “W”, the oil maintains a low viscosity in cold weather, and the 30 means it remains thin in hot temperatures.
5W-30 is one of the most popular types of oil as it performs under a wide variety of conditions. Since we all don’t live in the same climate, using oil that works well no matter what is an important factor in keeping your engine healthy.
GM, the manufacturer of Cadillac, has a set of oil recommendations under GM Standard GM4718M. Ideally, to keep your engine running in peak condition, you’ll want to use the recommended SAE 5W-30 oil, but you can also use SAE 10W-30 if the temperature in your area never falls below 0ºF (-18ºC).

How often to change oil on a 2004 Cadillac SRX 3.6L

Once you know your 2004 Cadillac SRX 3.6L oil capacity and type, you’ll actually need to
change your oil
But first, make sure it’s actually time to! GM recommends changing your Cadillac’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Unless you’re consistently on the road, an easier benchmark is every six months. Changing your oil within this timeframe ensures your oil is clean and doesn’t cause
wear and tear
on your engine.
However, since GM recommends a full synthetic oil, you may be able to extend your oil changes even further. Experts often say 7,500 to 10,000 miles is sufficient if you’re using a full synthetic. As this is a wide range, knowing the signs of needing an oil change can help make the process easier. If you notice any of these signs, it's time to change your oil:
  • Dark brown or black oil
  • Course or gritty feeling
  • Strange noises coming from your engine
  • Oil, smoke, or burning smells
  • Changes in how your vehicle is running

How to change your oil and oil filter

If you notice these signs or it’s been a while since your last oil change, it’s time to gather up some supplies and actually change your oil. To start you’ll need a socket wrench, drain pan, filter wrench, replacement filter, and 6 quarts of 5W-30 full synthetic oil
Before you
open the hood
, let your engine run for about five minutes to warm up your engine and oil. Once warmed up, turn off the engine, open your hood, and follow these steps:
  • Go underneath your engine to remove the drain bolt or plug
  • Place the drain pan underneath to catch the old oil
  • Remove the old filter as the oil is draining
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the drain plug or bot
  • Remove the oil fill cap and pour new oil into the engine
  • Replace the fill cap
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Double-check that you’ve put in the correct amount of engine oil with the oil dipstick. Once there’s enough oil, turn your car on and let it run. You want to ensure there aren’t any leaks.
Now that you’ve changed your oil, you’ll need to properly dispose of the old oil. Place the used oil in a sealed container and take it to a local shop or recycling center for proper disposal. Never dump old oil on the ground or in your garbage
