Where is the fuel filter on a 1995 Saturn SL2?

The fuel filter for the 1995 Saturn SL2 is located on the driver’s side of the car near the rear tire
In general, the fuel filter in any car is going to be somewhere between the fuel tank and the engine. That’s because the purpose of the fuel filter is to filter out contaminants and debris from your fuel before it goes into your engine. This keeps your engine healthy and maintains your car’s life and performance.
For older cars, it’s pretty standard to change the fuel filter periodically as routine maintenance. Some newer car models use lifelong filters, though, which don’t require routine maintenance or replacement.
Since the ‘95 SL2 fuel filter is not located within the fuel tank itself, changing the filter is a standard maintenance task that most people can learn to do at home.

Signs of a clogged fuel filter

You should change the fuel filter on your ‘95 SL2 every 30,000 miles if the car is in great condition. But once your SL2 has over 150,000 miles or so, you should replace the filter more regularly.
Aside from replacing the filter for routine maintenance, you should also replace the filter if it’s clogged. Here are some signs that your fuel filter could be clogged and in need of replacing
  • Engine misfiring
  • Engine sputtering or idling
  • Reluctant acceleration
  • Car won’t start
  • Check Engine Light turns on
  • Loud noises coming from fuel pump
  • Strong odors coming from exhaust
Driving with a clogged fuel pump will only decrease your fuel economy and increase your emissions. Plus, it’s bad for your engine. You should change your fuel filter as soon as you realize it needs to be replaced.

1995 Saturn SL2 fuel filter replacement

You can always take your 1995 Saturn SL2 to a trusted mechanic and have them change the fuel filter—the job typically costs around $100–$300 for parts and labor.
But if you decide you’d like to do the job yourself, here are the steps:
  1. Unplug the fuel pump relay fuse which is located under the floor between the two front seats.
  2. Run your SL2 to release pressure from the fuel pump. Once the motor stalls, turn the car off and remove the keys from the ignition.
  3. Use a car jack to jack up the rear end of your SL2
  4. Locate the fuel filter by the rear seat on the driver’s side of your car. The fuel filter is a cylindrical component clipped to the fuel line.
  5. Set a drip pan beneath the fuel filter location.
  6. Using your hands or needle-nose pliers, pinch the two clips on either side of the fuel filter to remove it.
  7. Replace the old fuel filter with a new one, ensuring the new filter is the same direction as the old.
  8. Remove the jacks, re-plug the fuel pump relay fuse, and start your engine.
