The smallest Hyundai SUV in the current lineup is the 2022 Hyundai Venue, a subcompact crossover that offers low-frills affordable SUV performance in a considerably small package.
It’s one of the smallest vehicles like it, standing 61.6 inches tall and measuring out to a total length of 159.0 inches. Cargo space is minimal with the Venue, but there’s a comfortable 91.9 square feet of passenger volume available for up to 5 passengers (including the driver). Folding the second-row seats flat allows for a maximum cargo capacity of 31.9 cubic feet.
An entry-level Venue SE starts at only $19,000, by far one of the best prices you’ll find on a new SUV. As it is in basic form, it offers generous safety features and driver assistance technology, but amenities like all-wheel drive and adaptive cruise control are reserved for the larger Hyundai SUVs.

is quickly establishing itself as a standout in the subcompact segment, and it starts off Hyundai’s lineup strongly. But while it offers plenty of ability to drive a little rougher a little more often, it won’t satisfy SUV buyers looking for something that has a bit of towing capacity.It’s still smaller than the smallest Honda SUV, standing only 61.4 inches tall, and measuring out to a total length of 166.0 inches. While cargo volume is sacrificed to some extent, the Kona doesn’t feel cramped, with 93 square feet of passenger volume. Folding the second row seats flat allows for a maximum cargo capacity of 45.8 cubic feet.
The most fun version of the Kona is the N Line equipped with all-wheel drive. This adds about $5,000 to the price, but it’s worth it for the peppy 195-horsepower turbocharged inline-4 engine. The speed of this engine is enticing, but there’s a lot to love about the standard engine as well, which gets much better fuel economy, rated at 30/35/32 mpg (city/highway/combined).

competes with the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 in the compact-SUV category. It’s available as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, and it’s looking extremely stylish heading into 2023.While the Kona can’t pull a trailer, the Tucson has 1,500-2,000 pounds of maximum towing potential, meaning you can use it to cart around things like dirt bikes, jet skis, or even a light camper. Cargo volume behind the second row doubles between the Kona and the Tucson, and folding down the back seats allows for 80.3 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume.
The best alternatives to Hyundai’s smallest SUV
Not all that impressed by what Hyundai has to offer? The Mazda CX-30 is a bit bigger than the smallest offerings from Hyundai, but as far as small SUVs are concerned, it’s hard to beat its class, style, and exciting performance. That’s especially true when the CX-30 is equipped with its upgraded turbocharged I-4 engine, which offers considerably more power than the simple I-4 on the Hyundai Venue.
The CX-30 is a blast to drive, and its 2.5 turbo engine can deliver a beyond-acceptable 250 horsepower when powered using 93-octane gas.
The common sense subcompact: Kia Soul
It may not be the most stylish subcompact on the block, but with tons of value and a surprisingly upscale and spacious interior, the Kia Soul delivers even in its most basic form. Its engine is more similar to that in the Venue than other vehicles we’ve mentioned so far, but upgrade to a GT-Line 1.6T Soul and you’ll bump power output up to 201 horsepower.
The Soul dominates this segment with 101 cubic feet of passenger volume, offering 24 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row of seating.
