The Accent only has three trim levels to the Corolla’s five, but the starting MSRP for the Accent’s highest trim level is notably almost $1,000 lower than the starting MSRP for the lowest trim level on the Corolla.

Let’s look at how these costs play out over time for these cars’ mid-level trims. According to Edmunds, the total five-year ownership cost for the Corolla SE adds up to $30,010. Included in that number are $3,897 for maintenance and $4,853 for insurance. The Hyundai Accent SEL has a five-year ownership cost of $28,823, with $2,538 for maintenance and $4,992 for insurance.

While their five-year cost to own is pretty similar in total, the Corolla is still more expensive to maintain than the Accent. That means with upfront costs and long-term ownership costs combined, the Accent should cost you the less of the two.

Performance

Both the Accent and the Corolla have decently spry handling and a comfortable ride, but the Accent was reviewed as having peppier acceleration.

The Corolla has two engine choices available—a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 139 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque, and a 2.0-liter upgrade in the SE and XSE trims that increase power to 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. A “sport” driving mode and a manual transmission are available.

The Accent, on the other hand, has just one powertrain option—a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine with an automatic transmission that generates 120 horsepower and 113 lb-ft of torque.

Both sedans were reported to have a comfortable—albeit noisy—ride. Even though it has fewer ponies under the hood, the Accent got higher marks for acceleration and overall peppiness. Neither one of these is going to be a speed racer, mind you, and if you want a manual transmission you’ll have to go with the Corolla.

The Corolla also has the option for a hybrid powertrain, which is not an option in the Accent. At the end of the day, the winner in this category will depend on what your priorities are.

Technology is one area where the Corolla comes out as the clear winner, and it’s evident what you’re getting for the higher sticker price.

The Accent has a standard 5-inch touchscreen. Upgrading to the 7-inch screen gives you ApplePlay and Android Auto, as well as an additional USB port. The Accent offers a few safety features at top-level trims, but nothing standard. To be fair, this is pretty on par for a subcompact at this price point, and many comparable vehicles don’t offer any driver assist features at all.

The Corolla has a standard 7-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included on all trims. There’s a good amount of driver assistance tech, too, like emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control.

If having a good dose of tech is a must-have for you, then the Corolla takes the lead over the Accent.

Reliability

Hyundai and Toyota both have impressive reliability ratings, so this is another area where they’re going to be pretty much neck in neck.

The 2022 Corolla gets an 85/100 from J.D. Power and is ranked third among all compact cars. RepairPal gives the Corolla an excellent score of 4.5/5, and rates it number one out of all compact cars.

The 2022 Accent earned a 90/100 from J.D. Power, and they placed it first out of seven when it came to subcompact cars. RepairPal was a fan as well, and gave the Accent a 4.5/5, and ranked it fifth out of 21 when it came to subcompact cars.

So what’s the takeaway? These are both very reliable cars, and there’s not really a bad choice between them in this regard. While the Accent's J.D. Power score is higher, it's important to note that the Corolla is in a different segment, so they’re not being directly compared.
