background
The 2022 Lexus ES luxury sedan joined the seventh generation of ES models with a minor facelift from the 2021 model year. Changes to the 2022 ES were fairly subtle including minor styling redesigns, an update to the driver assistance suite, and a new hybrid offering on the F-Sport trim.
If you’re on the hunt for a new car, you probably want to make sure that what you’re paying for is the best version that you can get. While the 2022 Lexus ES incorporates some minor upgrades and updates compared to the 2021 model, the changes are fairly subtle.

Is the 2022 Lexus ES redesigned?

Not exactly. It certainly isn’t a carbon copy of the 2021 ES—updated headlamps, wheels, and grille designs are the first noticeable changes—but the “facelift” for the 2022 Lexus ES was fairly minor.
If you have the choice between a 2022 ES or 2021 model, rest assured that you’ll basically be getting the same thing. Both are available with the same trio of drivetrains: a 2.5-liter inline-4 with 203 horsepower, a 3.5-liter V6 with 302 horsepower, or a hybrid powertrain that pairs a 2.4-liter I-4 with an electric motor for a total of 215 horsepower and improved fuel economy.
Notable features available with each model include:
  • IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and perfect five-star NHTSA crash test ratings
  • Standard automatic emergency braking and lane-assist
  • Standard 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility and a 10-speaker sound system
  • Available hybrid powertrain
  • Standard all-wheel drive (AWD)

2022 Lexus ES vs. 2021 Lexus ES: what changed?

Of course, you’re here to learn what’s different between these two model years! Let’s explore some of the Lexus ES features that were new for 2022.

A new F Sport hybrid trim

One significant change to the 2022 ES lineup was the addition of the 2022
Lexus ES300h
F Sport trim.
The F Sport trim was available on the 2021 ES250 and ES350 as well and adds adaptive suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, sport seats in the front, a rear spoiler, and dedicated gauges. The new 2022 ES300h F Sport simply combines these features with a more eco-friendly hybrid powertrain.
The starting price for a new 2022 Lexus ES300h F Sport is $46,850, making it the most expensive of the F Sport trims.

New F Sport Dynamic Handling package for ES350

The 2022 Lexus ES350 F Sport trim also got a new Dynamic Handling package which adds Sport+ and Custom selectable drive modes and front and rear parking sensors.

Styling

There are some slight styling changes made to both the interior and exterior of the 2022 Lexus ES. Exterior styling updates to the grille, headlamps, and wheels give the 2022 ES a slightly freshened look. The infotainment interface of the 2022 model is closer to the driver for easier and safer operation, but the optional 12.3-inch screen from the 2021 ES is no longer available on 2022 models.

Updated Lexus Safety System

The most significant technology upgrade to the 2022 Lexus ES is the addition of an updated driver assistance suite. While the 2021 ES comes with the Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, the 2022 model features the Lexus Safety System+ 2.5.
This adds pedestrian and cyclist detection to the list of standard features for the 2022 ES, as well as an updated adaptive cruise control system that detects upcoming sharp turns and slows the vehicle accordingly.

Pricing

Pricing for the 2022 Lexus ES was increased by only about $1,000. The cheapest trims of the 2022 ES are the ES250 and ES350, which come with a starting price of $42,100. A fully-loaded ES300h Ultra Luxury starts at $52,480.
Compare the starting prices (as new) of other seventh-generation ES models:
  • 2023 Lexus ES250/ES350: $42,490
  • 2021 Lexus ES250/ES350: $41,075
  • 2020 Lexus ES350: $40,925
  • 2019 Lexus ES350: $40,775

Should you buy a 2022 Lexus ES?

Now that the 2023 Lexus ES is available, you might be wondering whether you should buy a 2022 model or go in for the new version.
There was no major redesign for the 2023 ES, but there were a few more updates added. The 2022 model’s Dynamic Handling package is available on all 2023 F Sport models, rather than just the ES350. A new Lexus Interface infotainment system also adds wireless capabilities and the Hey Lexus AI. Last but not least, there are some new interior trim colors available.
The powertrain specs for the 2023 Lexus are consistent with past model years, so you’re probably better off with an older model if you can live without the new Lexus AI software. Of course, going for a new 2023 model means you’ll get to choose your options, while a used model will have already been put together—but it will help you save some cash.
