If fuel efficiency is your top priority, there’s no beating the 2022 Lexus NX 450h+. As the brand’s first plug-in hybrid vehicle, the popular NX SUV gets a major boost when it comes to fuel economy. With a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an 18.1-kWh lithium-ion battery and two electric motors, the NX 450h+ has an EPA-estimated 36 mpg with gas alone…but it earns 84 combined MPGe when running on electricity and gas.
The NX 450h+ can get you up to 37 miles on electricity alone, which will save quite a bit of money at the gas pump if you’ve got a relatively short commute. The luxury PHEV starts at $56,150 MSRP, which is around average for the class. (In comparison, the standard hybrid NX models get 39 mpg combined, and gas-powered NX models earn 25 combined mpg.)
In second place is the 2023 Lexus ES 300h hybrid sedan, starting at $43,690. The ES 300his a standard hybrid—not a PHEV—but its 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine will still get you a combined mileage of 44 mpg.
When it comes to non-hybrid models, Lexus vehicles aren’t the most fuel-efficient on the market. Coming in at first for gas-powered models is the 2022 Lexus UX200 subcompact crossover, getting 32 mpg combined (29/37 mpg for city/highway) and starting at a modest $34,600. Don’t get too attached though—Lexus is dropping all non-hybrid UX models for 2023.
Lexus hybrid models are unbeatable when it comes to fuel-efficient non-electric luxury models. In fact, the NX 450h+ is the most efficient vehicle in its class!
Most fuel-efficient Lexus SUVs
The NX 450h+ isn’t only the most fuel-efficient Lexus SUV—it’s the most efficient Lexus in general. If you need something a bit larger than the NX crossover, though, Lexus has a few more fuel-efficient options.
For other fuel-efficient Lexus SUVs, it’s a tie for second place. The hybrid version of the Lexus UX 250h and the standard hybrid NX engine both earn an EPA-estimated 39 mpg combined. The UX is the smaller option, but it’s also the more budget-friendly with a starting MSRP of $36,425—nearly $6,000 cheaper than the NX 350h’s starting price of $42,125 MSRP.
The only other Lexus SUV that could be considered “fuel efficient” is the RX 450h hybrid crossover, starting at $49,870 with a 30 mpg combined EPA rating. If you need the bonus third row of the extended L model, you’re looking at a price tag closer to $53,260.
If you’re looking for a larger Lexus SUV that will help you cut back on fuel costs, you’re out of luck. Neither of the brand’s larger SUV options—the GX or the LX—comes in a hybrid version, which means less-than-stellar fuel efficiency. The LX gets 19 mpg combined while the GX earns just 16 mpg combined.

Lexus offers two different coupe models for drivers with a need for speed…and little need for space. The more approachable

coupe earns a decent 25 mpg combined, getting up to 31 mpg on the highway. The top-level LC coupe, on the other hand, gets just 19 mpg combined. The RC isn’t only more fuel-efficient, but its starting $43,545 MSRP price tag will be more budget-efficient than the LC’s $94,125.
Between the three Lexus sedans, the non-hybrid ES four-door sedan still comes out on top with an EPA-estimated 28 mpg combined with the ES 250 model. With the bigger engine of the
ES 350
, fuel efficiency dips down to 26 mpg. The 2022 ES starts with a $41,875 price tag.Lexus currently offers five different non-hybrid SUV models. Unsurprisingly, the smallest sibling—the UX earns the best mileage. The 2022 UX 200 model achieves a combined mpg of 32 with a smooth 37 mpg on the highway. The standard UX starts at $34,225 while the F Sport trim has an MSRP of $36,940.
Lexus beats the competition in almost every category…except for the luxury sedan genre. The distinction of most fuel-efficient non-hybrid luxury sedan goes to the 2022 Audi A3, offering a combined 32 mpg…and a lower starting price of $34,800.
