Is Ford a luxury car?

No—Ford is not a luxury car manufacturer. Although many Fords incorporate high-end features, they are not classified as luxury vehicles. Ford Motor Company’s luxury vehicle division Lincoln, however, offers a lineup focused solely on luxury crossovers and SUVs.

What makes a luxury car?

Although Ford isn’t inherently a luxury car brand, it shares many of the same vehicle platforms with its luxury brand sister company Lincoln. Lincolns are just souped up with more high-end features—and a price tag to go along with it.
But what actually differentiates Ford from a luxury car brand? And what is a luxury car?
There’s no concrete definition for what a luxury vehicle is, but there are some basic features that tend to define what we classify as “luxury.” Some of these features include:
  • Performance features like larger and more powerful engines and upgraded suspensions that offer a smoother ride
  • Comfort features like leather upholstery, more support, heated or cooled seating, power-adjustable seats, or memory functions
  • Enhanced technology features like premium sound systems, telematics, entertainment, and top-level safety features
  • Style features like ambient cabin lighting, aluminum or carbon-fiber body parts, and custom headlights or taillights
The funny thing is that most mass-market vehicles, like Ford, deliver the same mechanics as many of these luxury brands. But when it comes to luxury, they often don’t compete where comfort, ride quality, and tech capabilities are concerned.

Is Ford a good luxury brand?

Ford isn’t classified as a luxury car brand, so don’t expect all the opulence and bells and whistles when you get behind the wheel of one. Although several packages and upgrades available can deck your Ford out with top-of-the-line features, it still won’t compete against other luxury car brands like
Mercedes-Benz
and
Land Rover
And if you’re looking for more speed and better driving dynamics, you’d be better off considering a luxury brand like
BMW
or
Audi
Although it may not be luxury, Ford shines in a few areas: quality, durability, and affordability. With some of the best engineering in the industry, Ford produces a wide selection of cars, SUVs, trucks, and commercial vehicles that are comfortable and affordable for the mass market.

The best Ford luxury cars

Ford doesn’t have a lineup of luxury cars, but a few are top contenders. And even if you choose one of its more basic vehicles, with all the available upgrades and packages, it’s easy to boost your Ford to a near-luxury level.

Ford GT

If you’re looking for luxury and speed, the Ford GT is it—but it’s going to take a large stack of cash to get behind the wheel of this halo car. With jaw-dropping bodywork and a modern-meets-retro design, the GT is Ford’s answer to a luxurious supercar. But the nearly $500,000 starting price means a select few are willing to shell out what it takes to own this bad boy.
Standard features include:
  • Blue Alcantara-wrapped carbon-fiber seats feature silver stitching
  • Integrated illuminated shift lights
  • 6.5-inch touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC infotainment interface
  • Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a voice-activated navigation system
Remember that because the Ford GT’s priority is driving, it doesn’t offer a suite of infotainment and connectivity features like most modern luxury cars. However, for the 2022 model year, Ford did unveil the 64' Prototype Heritage Special Edition that features a Lightspeed Blue microsuede covered dashboard and carbon-fiber seats, along with a black steering wheel and headliner, plus other upgrades.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500’s reputation was well-earned. It’s not only the mightiest Mustang you can get your hands on, but this 760-horsepower beast is also the most powerful road car Ford has ever produced. And with a starting price of just $80,795, you don’t have to break the bank to own it.
The Shelby is unlike any other vehicle on the market. While it may not be classified as luxurious by most people, it comes with a host of performance-oriented features, including
  • 8-inch touchscreen with Ford's Sync 3 software
  • 12-inch fully digital gauge cluster
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Leather-trimmed front seats with heated and cooled cushions
  • Six-way power driver's seat
  • Aluminum dashboard trim with exposed carbon fiber
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity
  • Subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot
  • 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system
You may not be able to unlock more luxury in the form of high-end finishes and top-of-the-line technology, but the Carbon Fiber Track Pack—20-inch carbon-fiber wheels, aerodynamic add-ons, grippier Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, and other weight-saving measures—is as close to luxury as you can get for performance diehards. However, with an $18,500 price tag, this add-on isn’t for the faint of heart.

Ford luxury SUVs

Speed demons aren’t the only luxury offerings you’ll find in Ford’s lineup—the Explorer and Expedition, when fully loaded, offer high-end trim levels and top-of-the-line upgrades that can take your SUV from family-friendly hauler to high-end tourer.
The
Ford Explorer
may not look like anything spectacular from the outside, but the King Ranch and Platinum trim levels prove differently. With a starting price of $55,125 and $55,270, respectively, the Explorer comes loaded with features like wood interior trim, leather upholstery, upgraded front seats with massage, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, and a 14-speaker B&O sound system.
Upgrade to the Platinum, and you’ll unlock adaptive headlights, 21-inch wheels, an automated parking system, and extended leather upholstery.
The
Ford Expedition
is the biggest and most robust road beast in Ford's SUV lineup. It’s large, in charge, and offers some of the best luxuries for a starting price of $54,200. So much so that the top-level Max Platinum will run you $83,255 without add-ons or packages.
Even on the base model, you get features like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable driver's seat, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, keyless entry with push-button start, and Ford Co-Pilot360.
But if you’re a big spender looking for the best money can buy, the Platinum will give you upgrades like satin aluminum exterior trim, wood and leather interior trim, massaging and ventilated front seats, power-folding second-and third-row seats, and BlueCruise (Ford's semi-automated driving system).
Even though Ford’s base SUV models offer a suite of luxury-like features, the King Ranch and Platinum trim levels can’t be beaten as far as performance, technology, and comfort go.

FAQs

Whether you classify Ford as more luxurious than Toyota falls under the “to each its own” saying. Both manufacturers produce practical, durable, and highly reliable vehicles with excellent safety ratings. Still, Ford probably takes the win if you’re looking for top-of-the-line features that provide the ultimate in comfort, style, and driving dynamics.
Yes and no—it depends on what you’re buying. Ford offers a variety of vehicles ranging from the overly affordable Ford EcoSport to the uber-expensive Ford GT. But as far as affordability goes, each model offers a range of trim levels that vary in price.
