background
The 2014 Mazda 3 is an affordable, peppy, and easy-to-drive sedan that swept many auto awards in its release year. The 2014 Mazda 3 stands the test of time and remains a great used sedan choice in 2023.
Are you considering purchasing a 2014 Mazda 3? We’re here to highlight this sedan's most notable specs and features, from the powertrain to the interior.

How much is a 2014 Mazda 3 sedan?

Originally, the 2014 Mazda 3 started at $17,995 MSRP, but a used model goes for much less today. Kelley Blue Book’s fair market value estimate for the 2014 Mazda 3 lies between about $10,500 and $12,000.
The S Touring is the most affordable 2014 Mazda 3 on the market, while the I Grand Touring, the top-trim level for the Mazda 3, is the most expensive option.
Keep in mind that these estimates are based on the assumption that the sedan is in good condition without options. Used car prices fluctuate greatly depending on the condition of the vehicle. They will also differ based on where they are being sold.
Depending on your needs and mechanical abilities, purchasing a cheaper 2014 Mazda 3 that needs a little bit of work might be a better idea than purchasing a top trim level model.

Is a 2014 Mazda 3 a good buy?

The 2014 Mazda 3 received stellar reviews when it was first released for its fuel economy, acceleration, easy handling, and advanced features. The 2014 Mazda 3 features continue to impress owners today. That being said—is it worth buying used?
As the first released model of the third generation Mazda 3, winning many awards for owner satisfaction and safety, the 2014 Mazda 3 stacks up nicely against its competitors as a used sedan choice. It's an excellent choice for drivers who need an affordable car with all the bells and whistles of an award-winning sedan.

Reliability

Mazda is known to produce highly reliable cars and was named the Most Reliable Brand in the auto industry in 2022 by Consumer Reports.
That being said, the 2014 Mazda 3 was released seven years ago. Even so, the 2014 Mazda 3 received a reliability rating of 3 out of 5 from J.D. Power, which is about average for many used sedans comparable to the 2014 Mazda 3.
If you buy a 2014 Mazda 3, keep an eye out for premature brake failure, touchscreen failure, and rust appearing on the undercarriage of the car. Thankfully, these issues are all fixable.

Speed and performance

The 2014 Mazda 3 has two powertrain options:
  • 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (155 horsepower)
  • 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (184 horsepower)
Front-wheel drive is standard across all models, and the 2.0-liter powertrain option has a six-speed automatic or manual transmission—your choice.
The 2.0-liter option provides adequate power for most drivers, but the 2.5-liter option has impressive acceleration and smooth gear-shifting, making it a more enjoyable car to drive. Even so, many drivers wish the 2.5-liter option came with a manual transmission.
As a mass-market vehicle, the 2.5-liter 2014 Mazda 3 provides a peppy, fun driving experience for anyone who wants a touch more power than the 2.0-liter engine.

Fuel economy

The 2014 Mazda 3’s fuel economy was incredibly impressive when it was released and still stands out as fairly good on gas today, even amongst its EV and hybrid competitors. The 2.0-liter option has a combined EPA rating of 33 mpg, while the 2.5-liter option has a combined EPA rating of 32 mpg.
The 2014 Mazda 3 consumes regular gasoline, so you don’t need to worry about paying premium prices at the pump, either.

Interior and comfort

As part of its major facelift since 2013, the 2014 Mazda 3 features a sleek, pared-down interior designed for ergonomics, safety, and ease of use. Most models come with heated leatherette seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an intuitive infotainment system, dual-zone climate control, and an option to upgrade to a nine-speaker Bose sound system and even a moonroof.
The 2014 Mazda 3 also offers Bluetooth, many USB ports, and clean, accessible dash controls. Overall, the Mazda 3 is a comfortable, convenient, and uncomplicated car from the inside out.

Safety

The 2014 Mazda 3’s safety ratings are one of its best features. This car received 5/5 stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and it’s a 2014 Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Here are just a few of the features that make this sedan so safe:
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision warnings
  • Smart City Brake support system
  • Rearview camera
All of these features make the 2014 Mazda 3’s safety ratings comparable to those of newer sedans. Just remember that while the 2014 Mazda 3 is outfitted with tons of great safety tech, these features aren’t cutting edge, meaning you’ll find even safer, more advanced safety features in a brand-new 2023 Mazda 3.
