What is the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Special Edition?

In 2002, Jeep introduced the first Special Edition Grand Cherokee and then brought the trim level back in 2004 as a middle-ground between the Laredo and the Limited. The Special Edition was available as a 2WD model (the “X Package”) or a 4WD model (the “T Package”)
Both versions included a new front bumper and grille design that were both body-colored, newly-designed fog lamps, an available power sunroof, skid plate, tire pressure monitoring system, and adjustable pedals, and the T Package included several additional features.
The 2004 Grand Cherokee Special Edition 2WD X Package had a starting MSRP of $29,150, while the 4WD T Package started at $34,305.

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee overview

Let’s take a look back at the Jeep Grand Cherokee from 2004 before diving deep into what made the Special Edition so special.
2004 would mark the end of the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s second generation—but even though an entirely different Grand Cherokee was underway for the future, Jeep didn’t skimp on making the last second-gen model a great year to buy.
First of all, the 2004 Grand Cherokee was available with two desirable engine configurations. The 4.0-liter inline-six could produce up to 195
horsepower
. The 4.7-liter V8, available with 4WD Grand Cherokees, produced 235 horsepower on most models but got up to 265 horsepower on the
Overland
trim.
On the 4WD Grand Cherokee, you could select either a Selec-Trac® or Quadra-Trac® system. Quadra-Trac® automatically sensed slippage and could allocate torque to specific wheels as needed. The Selec-Trac® was capable of full-time 4WD.
While the American SUV market made way for newer options, like the
Ford Escape
(debuted in 2001) and the
Chevy Trailblazer
(debuted in 1999), the Jeep Grand Cherokee focused on accentuating its strengths over the competition. It would remain an off-road capable vehicle, while new kids on the block aimed for the look of an SUV with the feel of a minivan.

What’s special about the Special Edition?

Besides the new exterior cosmetic upgrades that mimicked the Limited trim, the 2WD X Package special edition only offered a few added features in 2004. You got the Special Edition badging and had the option to buy a power sunroof, adjustable floor pedals, automatic tire pressure monitoring, and a skid plate package.
With the 4WD T Package, though, you got a lot more, including:
  • A 10-disc CD player and Infinity sound system
  • 6-way power-adjustable front seats
  • A leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • HomeLink universal transceiver
  • The option to buy the Up Country suspension package

2004 Grand Cherokee Special Edition vs. Limited

With a starting MSRP that was about $3,500 more than the Special Edition, the Limited Grand Cherokee offered everything the Special Edition had, plus:
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Universal remote transmitter
  • Audio controls on the steering wheel
  • Remote keyless power door locks
  • Dusk-sensing headlights
  • A remote
    anti-theft
    car alarm
While your shopping will be limited to the 2004 model year’s used inventory, it’s a good idea to know which trim level you prefer before you set out to buy.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
