The most common 2017 Nissan Sentra problems

Like the Nissan Altima from 2017, the Nissan Sentra was beset by transmission problems. Of 139 complaints registered with the NHTSA about the ‘17 Sentra, 42 of those are transmission-related. One complainant wrote about the transmission simply giving out after just 6 months of use (the car was acquired used), while another complained that the Sentra would lose acceleration while driving at highway speeds. Even with that loss of acceleration, it was reported the Sentra’s RPM would continue to rise.
Multiple drivers complained about having difficulty shifting gears, including one driver who had significant difficulty switching the Sentra out of Park mode while parked on a hill. Still another driver wrote the NHTSA about their 2017 Sentra switching gears unexpectedly while driving at highway speeds.
Here are some other notable problems recorded for the 2017 Sentra:
  • Vehicle failed to start after 41,000 miles of use, with no warning
  • Steering wheel seizing up while driving
  • Airbags not deploying after being involved in an accident
  • Push-to-start function not working
  • Key fobs inoperable
Along with these problems, three recalls were issued for the 2017 Sentra. The first recall was for the brake lights not illuminating when the brakes were applied. This could cause a serious accident if an unsuspecting driver slammed into the back of a Sentra that they didn’t realize was braking.
A second recall was issued for the Sentra’s ignition switch, as it would switch off without warning, increasing the risk of an accident.
A third recall involved the improper deployment of the front passenger airbag. An airbag not deploying properly can significantly increase the risk of serious injury, or worse.

Is the 2017 Nissan Sentra reliable?

The 2017 Sentra has mixed reviews when it comes to reliability. According to RepairPal, the Sentra gets a very good 4/5 reliability rating. However, JD Power gave the Sentra just a 76/100 reliability score, which is average at best. In JD Power’s compact car reliability rankings, the 2017 Sentra failed to crack the top ten.
In terms of average annual repair costs, RepairPal pegs the Sentra’s yearly costs at around $366, which is significantly below the average for a passenger sedan.
