2017 Nissan Sentra engine oil capacity

A 2017 Nissan Sentra uses 4.2 quarts or 4 liters of engine oil every time you perform an oil and filter change.
Keep in mind: Motor oil is typically sold in whole quart increments, so you’ll need to buy a full 5 quarts to cover your needs.

2017 Nissan Sentra oil type

Nissan recommends using
Genuine Nissan Synthetic 0W-20 motor oil
in the 2017 Nissan Sentra. You can use other brands of oil so long as they meet the following requirements:
  • Synthetic motor oil
  • 0W-20 viscosity rating
Pro Tip Make sure you’re referencing the correct model year when determining what oil type to use in your car. If you’re driving a 2018 or later Nissan Sentra, for example, you’ll need to use 5W-30 synthetic oil instead of 0W-20.

How often to change the oil in a 2017 Nissan Sentra

You should only need to change the oil in your 2017 Nissan Sentra about every 5,000 miles or every six months—whichever comes first.
Check your oil once a month or after every other gas fill up to ensure it’s properly maintained. You may need to change your ‘17 Sentra’s oil earlier than your
car maintenance schedule
says to if you notice any of the following warning signs:
  • Dark brown or black oil
  • Gritty oil
  • New or unfamiliar noises coming from the engine
  • The smell of smoke or burning
What to do: If you notice any of these symptoms, change your Sentra’s oil as soon as possible.

How to change your oil and filter

When the time rolls around for an oil change, you’ll need a few
essential tools and supplies
:
  • A socket wrench
  • A drain pan
  • A fresh oil filter
  • 5 quarts of 0W-20 synthetic oil
  • An oil filter wrench
Once you have all of those things, follow these steps to change the oil in your 2017 Nissan Sentra:
  • Find the oil fill cap and remove it.
  • Locate the oil drain bolt under the engine bay. Position the drain pan underneath it and remove the drain bolt. The old oil will begin draining immediately.
  • While the oil is draining, use the filter wrench to remove the old oil filter.
  • Wait for the old oil to finish draining, and then install the fresh oil filter.
  • Replace the oil drain bolt and tighten it.
  • Refill the engine’s oil reservoir with the new oil.
  • Use the dipstick to double-check that you’ve added enough oil.
  • Start the engine and allow the Sentra to run for a few minutes while you watch for any leaks.
  • Seal up the old oil in a secure container and take it to a nearby recycling center.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Don't forget: Check that the
oil pressure light
has turned off on your dashboard to signify a successful 2017 Nissan Sentra oil change!
