Toyota is no stranger to problematic vehicle recalls, but this might be one of the worst yet. The Toyota bZ4X recall was officially announced in June, as Electrek
reports. The recall centers around a mechanical failure that affects the wheels of the vehicle, causing them to fall off. This is obviously a safety issue for drivers, to the point that Toyota has been sending out letters to all bZ4X owners telling them to stop driving the vehicle until it’s repaired at a licensed Toyota servicing location.
What is Toyota doing to address the recall?
There are only 2,700 Toyota bZ4Xs affected by the recall, which may have something to do with Toyota’s subsequently generous offer to buy back customers’ Toyota bZ4X. The other route that they’re peddling is for customers to take advantage of a loaner vehicle and incentive package.
This incentive package covers the cost of refueling the loaner vehicle and puts $5,000 toward the customers’ loan or lease payments, which is certainly appealing.
The official Toyota letter covers all the specifics of the options they’re providing to customers, but other perks include additional time for complimentary charging at all EVgo-owned and operated public stations nationwide through December 31, 2024. Toyota will also provide an extension to the customer’s vehicle’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
Should customers keep their bZ4X or have Toyota repurchase it?
This decision should be based on whether or not customers truly love their bZ4X, and if they’re willing to wait for Toyota to fix a recall that hasn’t been figured out yet. That’s right—Toyota doesn’t actually know what’s going on with the bZ4X, which is probably why they’re giving customers so many options.
The recall also affects the Subaru Solterra
, which is built on the same platform as the bZ4X. The best option may be to have Toyota repurchase the vehicle if you’re feeling impatient, but if you like the bZ4X and are hopeful that Toyota will manage to keep the wheels on their new EV, perhaps it’s best to wait and take the loaner route.
