background
Every time
Ferrari
unveils a new supercar, it is exciting. Even by Ferrari's high standards, the new 296 GTS convertible looks incredibly cool. Besides letting drivers cruise with the wind in their hair, what sets the 296 GTS apart from other supercars?
According to
Motor Trend
, the Ferrari 296 GTS is a beast that produces 818 horsepower. It's even a plug-in hybrid that can run solely on its electric motor.

The Ferrari 296 GTS will be great for rides with the roof down

Fans of Ferrari might think that the 296 GTS name sounds a little familiar, and that's because it is largely based on the 296 GTB. However, unlike the GTB, the GTS will have a removable hardtop.
The Ferrari looks just as sleek with or without the roof, so drivers will be stylish no matter how they drive.
In true Ferrari fashion, the process of retracting or deploying the hardtop is appropriately fast. It takes 14 seconds for the Ferrari to either remove the roof or put it back in place. If a driver decides that they want to remove the roof midway through a drive, they can do so quickly.
Additionally, the Ferrari 296 GTS has a unique vertical window to help control the amount of wind that drivers and passengers feel with the top down. This helps make the Ferrari convertible experience even more comfortable to accommodate different conditions.

A Ferrari with a plug-in hybrid system

The convertible features of the 296 GTS are great, but this is a Ferrari after all. That means that performance is the name of the game, and the 296 GTS does not disappoint there.
It starts with a 2.9-liter V6 that produces 654 horsepower. However, that's just the start of the powertrain, as the Ferrari 296 GTS is a plug-in hybrid with a 7.5-kWh battery. This electric motor adds 165 hp to the Ferrari for a total of 818 hp.
Plug-in hybrid features of the Ferrari 296 GTS don't just add extra horsepower to the supercar, though. The Ferrari can drive 15 miles using just the electric motor.

How will the Ferrari 296 GTS compare to the 296 GTB?

Earlier, we mentioned that the Ferrari 296 GTS is largely similar to another model, the Ferrari 296 GTB
Car and Driver’s
review of the 296 GTB shows just how identical these two new supercars are. Just like the 296 GTS, the 296 GTB is powered by a 654-horsepower V6 and an electric motor.
The main difference between the two is that the 296 GTS is a convertible, and the 296 GTB is not. Otherwise, they look almost the same. If a driver is choosing between the two, it might come down to whether or not they want a convertible.
Pricing for the Ferrari 296 GTS is not yet available, but the price of the 296 GTB is. This Ferrari starts at $322,986, and because the two models are so similar, it is reasonable to believe the 296 GTS will be similarly priced. The convertible aspect of the 296 GTS could make it more expensive, though.
