The Ford F-150 Is Going Down-Under

The
Ford F-150
is a gigantic truck that has put Ford on the map. However, for the majority of its life, it has only been sold in North America and a few other countries. This will soon change.
Ford
plans to start selling the Ford F-150 truck in Australia with a right-hand drive option, which would make it the biggest pick-up in the country. Let's explore the specs of the truck and what other options will be available from the model.

The specs of the Ford F-150 sold in Australia

According to
CarExpert
, Ford will be selling the Ford F-150 pickup truck in Australia starting in 2023. This follows news of the success of the Chevy Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500 in the country. In the last two decades, these models have performed well, with Ram selling 3,819 units in 2021, while Silverado sold 2,114 models.
Ford will offer two trims for the Ford F-150 in Australia: the Lariat and the XLT. Both models are powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine, which is also an EcoBoost twin-turbocharged version.
The engine produces around 400 hp and about 500 lb-ft of torque. This is about 20 hp shy of the 6.2-liter Silverado engine, but outpaces the model by about 40 lb-ft of torque.
In addition, the truck will have a towing capacity of 4,500 kg (9,921 lb), which is about 2,205 lb over the maximum capacity of the Ranger. Ford believes that most Australians want to tow, and this model gives them more capability to do so. The model comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission and has a switchable four-wheel-drive drivetrain.

The comfort and convenience features of the Ford F-150

The automaker has not released all the features that will be in the Australian version of the Ford F-150. However, the model is expected to have chrome exterior trim on door handles and rims, as well as 17-inch wheels, like the XLT model sold in America. Besides, the tray will come with a spray-in bed liner.
On the inside, the automaker may consider adding its 8.0-inch central touchscreen that comes with an analogue instrument cluster. However, it may also opt for the 12-inch infotainment system that is optional in its American models. Other features that may be found on the 2020 Australian Ford F-150 include adaptive cruise control, surround-view camera, keyless start and entry, and trailer backup assist.

Is the Ford F-150 likely to succeed in Australia?

According to the
Daily Mail
, the last Ford F-150 left the Australian showrooms in 1993. In its place, the automaker sold the heavier F-250 and F-350 from 2001 to 2006. A few F-150s have also been sold recently as converted ambulances.
The reason for Ford leaving the market was not stated, but it is said that the model was experiencing lower sales after taking a beating from models such as the Toyota Hilux. However, based on the performance of the other trucks from the automaker in Australia, it is expected that the F-150 will have a good run. Its higher towing capacity and torque are best suited for Australia's sprawling wilderness.
