Known more for its handling capabilities versus its impressive acceleration, the Cayman GT4 RS is much faster than the Cayman GT4.
shares that it’s “powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six taken straight from the 911 GT3 but turned around 180 degrees. It makes 493 hp at 8400 rpm, up from the regular GT4's 414 horsepower.” Delivered at 6550 rpm, it features 331 lb-ft of torque.
The extra horsepower for this mid-engine Porsche makes it an impressive 23.6 seconds faster than its predecessor. The GT4 RS doesn’t come with a manual option like the GT4, but does have a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The RS also rides 1.2 inches lower and if you adjust the spoilers to their track settings, the downforce improves by 25% compared to the GT4.
Whether you’re driving or in the passenger seat, this new variant makes for an extraordinary ride. Car and Driver was impressed with “the free-breathing 4.0-liter inhal[ing] through individual throttle bodies and react[ing] with a hard-edged immediacy that's rare in a world of turbocharged sports cars.” You can actually feel the back engine and air intakes right by your ears.
With a starting price of around $145,000, the GT4 RS’s top speed claims to be 196 mph, taking only 3.2 seconds to get from 0 to 60 mph. The use of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic keeps the weight down, and “[It’s] hood, front fenders, seats, and rear wing all are constructed of the lightweight material,” reports Car and Driver.
Porsche expects 70 percent of customers to opt for the Weissach Package to make the car lighter. This swaps out the standard steel half roll cage with a titanium version and upgrades the windows, mirror, hood, and side blades. Expect to pay at least $13,000 for the extra treatment.
It’s hard to find any drawbacks for this track hero. OK, we found one. “It's too bad the RS doesn't offer a clutch pedal, but the PDK does let you select gears with paddle shifters or the console shifter, which looks like a manual shift lever,” Car and Driver critiqued.
The 718 GT4 RS Clubsport model starts at $229,000 for customers who want a turnkey racecar. Instead of carbon-fiber bodywork, the upscale model uses natural flax-based fiber composite treated with new resins. It’s just as lightweight and much better for the environment.
