self-driving car
technology is coming from
BMW
, but it might look a little different than you think. The luxury German automaker formed a long-term partnership with tech companies Qualcomm and Arriver in 2021 and plans to bring Level 3 autonomous driving technology to BMW models by 2025.
To get a quick refresher on autonomous driving levels and what they mean, there are six levels total:
  • Level 0 is no driving automation, which encompasses most cars on the road today.
  • Level 1 is driver assistance, which includes one automated system for driver assistance such as adaptive cruise control.
  • Level 2, or partial driving automation, means that there is an advanced driver assistance program on board, or programming that can assist with steering as well as accelerating and decelerating.
All levels 0 through 2 require the human to monitor the driving environment at all times. That changes when you get to level 3. That stage, which is what BMW is aiming for, allows for both the human driver and the automated system itself to monitor the driving environment. Level 3 cars come with “environmental detection” features, where the vehicle itself can perform most driving on its own, but still requires human override.

What BMW has in store

For BMW, Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities would mean that in certain driving situations such as highways, the person behind the wheel wouldn’t need to have their hands on the steering wheel or their eyes on the road at all times. The company plans to make this happen by utilizing existing technology from its two tech partners.
According to
Car and Driver
, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Ride Vision system-on-a-chip (SoC) and Arriver’s Computer Vision technology will be integrated with BMW’s current automated driving technologies, which first came to market with the BMW iX and will be seen again in the new 7-series launching in April.
Bringing this kind of technology to the consumer marketplace is a lofty goal, but combining the resources and research teams of the three companies will allow for a serious advantage when it comes to making more autonomous driving a mainstream reality.

An automated future

BMW might not be the only automotive brand that benefits from this new collaboration, as all three brands have said they’re open to further partnerships.
Thus far, the only brand that has won international regulatory approval for Level 3 autonomous driving is fellow German automaker
Mercedes-Benz
. Germany is the first country to even create a legal basis for Level 3 Driving aids, so it makes sense that the two automaker giants would be at the forefront of Level 3 automation.
Only one other Level 3 car exists on the marketplace today, but the Honda Legend featuring Honda Sensing System technology is only available in Japan.
