Buying a
new car
can be a headache—and not just because you often need to haggle with a
dealership
over it.
When you're buying a new car, you often don't know what you're getting into. Unless you read a lot of automotive media and reviews, you can miss out on some of the best cars currently on the market. But thankfully, publications like Consumer Reports help make that task a little easier by picking for you.
We've condensed a list of
Consumer Reports
' best overlooked cars and SUVs for 2022 down to a handful of picks that might just be the hidden gems you're looking for.

2022 Toyota Avalon: A luxurious hidden gem

The 2022 Toyota Avalon tops the list of overlooked cars (and ranks one out of four in CR's large car ratings). The publication calls it a luxury car wearing a mainstream badge, lauding its comfortable ride, great handling and spacious interior.
The Avalon retails for between $36,825 and $44,150. If you're not put off by the price, you better hurry; Toyota is discontinuing the Avalon after the 2022 model year, having sold just under 20,000 in 2021.

2022 Hyundai Accent: A affordable hidden gem car

The least expensive car on this list isn't necessarily what you'd call a "hidden gem," but the
2022 Hyundai Accent
is a great budget-friendly choice for your basic transportation needs. Starting at $16,645, the subcompact Hyundai Accent features a basic if not slightly uncomfortable interior and is light on features.
But if you're just looking to get from point A to point B and don't need the bells and whistles of a more premium car or the size of a crossover SUV, the Accent could be right up your alley.

2022 Mini Cooper Countryman: A joy to drive

While technically a small crossover SUV, the 2022 Mini Cooper Countryman's design still has nods to the original super-compact city car. CR calls the Countryman fun to drive and surprisingly comfortable and roomy, but it's a tad expensive for a Mini. Prices for the Mini Cooper Countryman range from $29,100 to $41,500.

2022 Honda Insight: Does 54 mpg sound nice right now?

The
2022 Honda Insight
is a great affordable hybrid sedan to help grant you some relief at the fuel pump this summer. It's essentially a previous-model Civic with a hybrid drivetrain that nets a 54 mpg overall/44 mpg city/62 mpg highway gas mileage at a relatively affordable $25,760-$29,790 price range.
CR notes that it gets the highest gas mileage of any vehicle the publication has tested that isn't a plug-in hybrid, surpassing the Toyota Prius. The publication touts the Insight's comfortable ride, decent handling and roomy interior, but it's low to the ground, making it difficult to get in and out of, while the engine can get loud once it finally kicks in.

Why you might be having trouble finding a new car

Again, buying a new car can be a pain for the reasons stated earlier. But two new factors have made it a little more difficult to find that perfect vehicle lately.
Domestic automakers like GM and Ford have shifted away from cars in general to focus more on SUV and truck production. Want a new Ford Focus? You'll have to look for something reasonable in that used lot—and used cars have been at the highest price we've seen in years.
Another issue is
inventory
in general; even companies like Honda and Toyota that still manufacture new cars can find themselves short on inventory thanks to ongoing supply chain issues.
Whether it's pandemic- or labor-related, failure to get the necessary parts and components from point of origin to the manufacturing facility can lead to delays in vehicle deliveries.
