Will home insurance cover a new roof?
A tornado came through my town, and a huge tree branch fell through the roof of my house. The contractor said they will need to replace the entire roof. Will my home insurance policy help cover the cost of a new roof?

Wow, I am so sorry to hear about the tornado and the damage it caused your house.
Fortunately, I have good news for you. The majority of
home insurance
will cover your roof and the replacement cost if it gets damaged by a covered peril. The tree that fell through your roof was a falling object, which are typically covered by standard homeowners policies. Go over the terms and conditions of your policy to make sure, or you can always call your insurance carrier and have a representative explain your coverages.
If your policy has the right coverage and you decide to submit a claim to your insurance carrier, keep your deductible in mind. You will not have coverage with your homeowners policy if your deductible is higher than the repair costs.
It’s also good to remember that submitting an insurance claim, your rates might go up. You will need to decide if you want to pay for the repair costs out of pocket, or make the claim and have higher insurance premiums. It may not be worth it to submit a claim if you are able to afford the repair costs.
