Why would you have to retake your driving test?
My father is turning 80 years old this week and he keeps asking if he’ll have to do another road test to keep driving (he loves driving). Are there some situations where you’d need to retake a driving test?

Happy birthday to your father! There are a few reasons why someone might have to retake a driver’s test—and age is one of them. The following are the most likely reasons why someone would have to retake a driving test:
- You failed the first time: This probably goes without saying, but if you fail your road test, you’ll have to take it again if you want to drive. If after you fail you throw up your hands and decide that driving just isn’t for you? Well, then you won’t need to retake the test.
- Age: In some states, seniors may be required to retake their driving test at a certain age. As we get older, sometimes vision and cognitive abilities decrease—and the state just wants to make sure you’re still able to drive safely. Each state has different rules regarding whether older drivers need to retake their road test, so check with your local DMV.
- Expired license: If your license has been expired for many years and you decide you want to drive again, you’ll likely be tested on your driving abilities to ensure you still know how to drive safely.
- Suspended or revoked license: If you’ve had your license suspended or revoked for any reason, you’ll almost certainly have to retake your driving test to have your license reinstated. You’ll likely have to pass the knowledge test, as well.
