Why is there transmission fluid leaking from my 2007 Nissan Altima?

I got home from work last night and noticed red fluid leaking from my vehicle. I think my transmission is leaking, but I’ve never had this happen before and I’m not sure what to do. Why is there transmission fluid leaking from my 2007 Nissan Altima?

Oh no! I’m sorry to hear about your transmission leak. Unfortunately, a transmission leak is cause for concern and should be dealt with as soon as possible to avoid any long term damage.
There are a few reasons why your 2007
Nissan Altima’s
transmission may be leaking:
  • The transmission pan/gasket may have worn down over time, been damaged accidentally when the transmission fluid was changed, or been hit by a road hazard, which caused the seal to break. In some cases, tightening the bolts that connect the pan to the transmission can stop the leak!
  • The torque converter, which pumps transmission fluid into the transmission, may have a crack that the fluid is leaking out of.
  • The lines that connect the transmission to the radiator, which cool off the transmission fluid, may be damaged. To find the source of the leak, look to the lowest point on the lines.
  • Seals inside the transmission keep the transmission fluid pressurized, but when the seals go bad, the transmission cannot hold the pressure and fluid will leak.
If you discover the source of the leak to be coming from the transmission pan, your car should be safe to drive. However, you should still have the leak fixed as soon as possible.
In any case, it’s best to address the leak to avoid any bigger problems later on. For answers to all of your maintenance questions, download the insurance expert super app
