Why doesn’t my car start in the cold?

I live up in Boston, and the winters here are pretty brutal. I park outside and lately, I’ve been having some trouble getting my engine going. Why won’t my car start when it’s cold?

Boston does get some really chilly winters, and it’s never fun to be stuck in the cold when your car won’t start.
*Your car won’t start in the cold because of the
battery
and
engine
oil. When it’s extremely cold, your battery will produce a weaker electrical current and the engine oil will thicken, causing your engine to stall.**
Cold temperatures cool your battery down. Simply put, a cold battery does not produce the same charge and power that a warm one does. And with not enough charge, the engine won’t start.
Your car also needs enough oil to flow to the engine in order to run. Those subzero Boston winter temperatures will cause the oil to become thicker, and the thick oil will have a harder time circulating in your engine.
If this happens to you, you can try turning your engine off and trying again or checking your oil level. But, you may need to jump-start your battery as a last resort.
