Why did my cruise control stop working?

I was driving on the highway one day, and I tried to put on my cruise control, and for some reason, my car’s system won’t work. I’m concerned that this could pose a bigger deal later on, but I’m curious why my cruise control stopped working randomly?

Oh no! We’re sorry to hear about your cruise control not working. Many factors could be the cause of faulty cruise control. Some of the most common culprits include the following:
  • Faulty brake pedal switch: Given that cruise control is set to be disengaged whenever the brake pedal is pushed, if the brake pedal switch doesn’t function properly, your car will think that the brakes are engaged and won’t allow cruise control to be set.
  • Failing speed sensor: Your car’s speed sensor has multiple roles to fulfill—including operating your car’s cruise control. If the speed sensor doesn’t work properly, you’ll probably notice your cruise control won’t work either and could potentially cause further issues with your speedometer and engine down the road.
  • Damaged vacuum actuator: This applies commonly to older cars; however, your cruise control may stop working if the vacuum actuator has stopped working, which is what regulates your cruise control speed.
  • Bad fuse: Like other parts of your car, your cruise control has a corresponding fuse that will blow when a circuit gets shortened to protect the system. If it blows, your cruise control may stop working.
As you try to figure out the main culprit behind your car’s cruise control failure, make sure you’re covered with the right
