Which European countries require an international driving permit?
I’m flying into Paris next month for business. I need to rent a car but I’m not familiar with international driving requirements. Which countries in Europe require you to have an international driving permit?

It’s a great idea to familiarize yourself with international driving requirements before you arrive at your destination.
The European countries that require an international driving permit (IDP) in conjunction with a valid U.S. driver’s license include:
- Austria
- Bosnia-Herzegovina
- Germany
- Greece
- Hungary
- Italy
- Poland
- Slovenia
- Spain
If you’re unsure about other driving requirements abroad, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you’re visiting.
