Which European countries require an international driving permit?

I’m flying into Paris next month for business. I need to rent a car but I’m not familiar with international driving requirements. Which countries in Europe require you to have an international driving permit?

It’s a great idea to familiarize yourself with international driving requirements before you arrive at your destination.
The European countries that require an international driving permit (IDP) in conjunction with a valid U.S. driver’s license include:
  • Austria
  • Bosnia-Herzegovina
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Italy
  • Poland
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
If you’re unsure about other driving requirements abroad, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you’re visiting.
In addition to getting an IDP before you depart, you’ll also need to make sure your insurance policy covers international driving. Your current car insurance policy may not, but insurance expert

can find you one that does.
Just text one of Jerry’s friendly agents straight through the app—they’ll steer you in the right direction! That way, you can get set up before you head to the airport.
