Where is the Jeep Grand Cherokee OBD port located?
The check engine light illuminated on the dash of my Jeep Grand Cherokee. I bought an OBD reader but can’t find the OBD port to plug it in. Where would I find it?

If your
check engine light
comes on, an OBD reader is the easiest way to figure out what it means! The Jeep Grand Cherokee
OBD port is located under the steering column on the driver’s side, near the hood lever. The OBD II port is a mandatory part of any vehicle and is primarily used to diagnose problems with your vehicle, so once you find it, you can plug an OBD reader in and figure out what the problem is. But aside from vehicle diagnostics, the OBD-II port is also involved in:
- Diagnosing engine faults
- Engine control unit (ECU) reprogramming
Once you attach the OBD-II scanner to your Jeep, follow these steps:
- Start your Jeep to power up the scanner
- If required, enter any vehicle-specific information requested (some tools ask for the VIN)
- Press “Scan” on the code reader and allow it to check engine codes, then follow the directions on the screen
- The screen will record any error codes
- First character: The vehicle part affected by the problem
- Second character: Generic code or issued by the manufacturer
- Third character: Provides specific information about what area of the vehicle is affected
- Last character: Identifies the exact problem
Once you have an engine code, you can determine the problem and the solution!
