When will electric cars be mandatory?

I’m in the process of shopping around for a new car, but I don’t want to invest a ton of money into a gas-powered car if electric cars are eventually going to be required. When will electric cars be mandatory?

While many places across the globe are implementing policies to limit the production of cars that rely on
gasoline
, whether or not there are plans to make a full switchover to
electric-only cars
depends on where you live.
A few examples of timelines are as follows:
  • In April of 2022, California air quality officials released a proposal to require all new cars sold to be zero-emission vehicles by 2035.
  • The U.S. government plans to end gas-powered vehicle purchases by 2035 and signed a nonbinding goal that 50% of new US car sales be electric by 2030.
  • By 2026, US automakers will be required to raise the corporate average fuel economy of their fleets to 49 mpg.
  • Lawmakers in Washington passed legislation adopting a target for the state to end the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2030.
  • The European Union has proposed an effective ban on the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035.
While nothing is set in stone just yet, it appears that lawmakers across the world are pushing for EV adoption as a way to combat climate change.
