What’s a Lexus ES300 transmission replacement cost?

The day has finally come—my faithful Lexus that I’ve owned for almost 15 years needs a new transmission. I’m not sure whether to replace it or to buy another car. What’s a Lexus ES300 transmission replacement cost?

Edmunds once noted that the Lexus ES300 “sets the standard for entry-level luxury sedans,” and many ES300 owners are like you—loyal to their cars! Depending upon your car’s model year, you can expect to pay around $3,500 for a replacement and between $1,500 to $3,500 for a transmission rebuild.
You should ask your mechanic whether rebuilding the transmission is an option. If it is, this approach will likely save you some money, as the table below indicates:

Pros and Cons
Replacing a transmission
Your vehicle will require a transmission replacement if it is damaged severely. While this is a more costly repair than a rebuild, your damaged transmission will be replaced with a factory refurbished one.
When a transmission comes from the factory, it likely means it has been updated to pre-built factory specs.
Rebuilding a transmission
Rebuilding a transmission is a good option, as long as the damage is not too severe and you have a knowledgeable mechanic skilled with transmissions.
While rebuilding may be less expensive than replacing a transmission, be sure that your mechanic is comfortable with transmissions. Keep in mind that taking apart and rebuilding a transmission takes time—and money.
Of course, you’ll also want to take into account the current mileage on your car and its Kelley Blue Book value. But if you decide your ES300 is otherwise in good shape, replacing the transmission will be far cheaper than buying a new Lexus!
Deciding whether a Lexus ES300 transmission replacement is worth the cost is a decision that requires time. Can you save money by rebuilding the transmission? Is that even an option? Will a replacement transmission cost more than your Lexus’s value? Is it time to start looking for a new(er) car? Finding the answers to all these questions takes time.
