What should you do when driving near a tornado?

What should you do if you’re driving and you hear a tornado alert come on the radio? This has never happened to me but I live in an area where tornados are pretty common, so I’m always a little nervous when it starts to get stormy outside.

Driving near a
tornado
sounds really scary! If you ever find yourself in this situation, don’t try to drive faster than the storm. Instead, pull over as soon as possible and do one of three things:
  1. If it’s possible and the weather hasn’t become too dangerous yet, seek immediate shelter in a nearby building.
  2. If there are no buildings nearby, you can also seek shelter in a ditch or another low, protected area if there is one nearby. Only do this if the area you see is lower than the road that you’re driving on.
  3. Alternatively, park your car in a safe location. Roll up your windows and duck down below your windows and windshield with your seatbelt fastened. If possible, cover your head with a cushion, a big jacket, or your hands.
If your hometown is prone to tornados, you’ll want to make sure that your insurance covers weather-related damages. With the
