What national forests are in Michigan?

Our family is planning a Great Lakes summer vacation, but my daughter and I both are honestly afraid of being out on the water. We thought we’d hit up a national forest while everyone else is out boating and swimming, so what national forests can we find in Michigan?

Michigan
is home to three national forests, and each is adjacent to at least one of the
biggest lakes in Michigan
Michigan’s national forests are:
  • Ottawa National Forest: The Ottawa National Forest takes up 993,000 acres of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and borders Lake Superior.
  • Hiawatha National Forest: This is another Upper Peninsula national forest, with 879,000 acres, and it borders Lake Superior, Lake Huron, and Lake Michigan.
  • Huron-Manistee National Forest: The Huron-Manistee National Forest takes up 540,000 acres of Lower Michigan and touches Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
Michigan also hosts six national parks, including:
  • Isle Royale National Park
  • Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
  • Keweenaw National Historic Park
  • River Raisin National Battlefield
  • Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
  • North Country Trail
