What is the best year for a used Jeep Cherokee?
I come from a Jeep family…my husband drives a Grand Cherokee and I have a Compass. We’re looking for a used Cherokee to add as a backup vehicle (and eventual first car for our oldest), but we’re aware of the Cherokee’s spotty reputation. What’s the best year for a used Jeep Cherokee?

As far as compact SUVs go, the
Jeep Cherokee
is a popular choice among Jeep lovers and off-road enthusiasts alike for its versatility and durability. But they’re not always the safest or the most reliable vehicles on the market—and some models are worse than others. If you’re in the market for a used Cherokee, we’d recommend looking at the 2018 or 2020 models. 2018 Jeep Cherokee. With minimal owner complaints (less than 400, according to the NHTSA) and strong reliability ratings, the 2018 Cherokee is worth considering despite several active recalls. J.D. Power gives the 2018 Cherokee an impressive 84/100 score for reliability.
2020 Jeep Cherokee. Even better than the 2018 Cherokee is the 2020 model, which sports just 37 complaints on the NHTSA website. Significant changes to the Cherokee were made in 2019, making the 2020 version more mechanically sound and cosmetically appealing—and received a “great” reliability rating of 84/100 from J.D. Power.
Whatever Cherokee you choose, we’d suggest you steer clear of some of the older Cherokee models, particularly ones made between 2014 and 2015. Problematic powertrains, recalls, and customer complaints have led the National Highway and Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) to open a probe into some versions of the fifth-generation Cherokee.
