I got into Emerson for grad school, so I’m going to be moving to Boston soon from L.A. I have a Prius and plan to make the big cross-country move with it. What’s the best driving route from Los Angeles to Boston?

Los Angeles
to Boston
will depend on when you’re going and how comfortable you are driving on mountain roads. Since you’re headed to school, you may be moving in the fall—in which case, it’s safest weather-wise to stick to the southern route. Here’s what that looks like:
- Take I-10 E out of L.A.
- Pick up I-91 N inHartford, then take it north intoMassachusettsuntil you reach the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90 E) nearChicopee
- Take I-90 E all the way into Boston
As you’re probably aware, this trip is quite long—around 45 hours total without traffic. You’ll generally want to break it up into six to eight hours of driving per day to safely allow enough time for food, fuel, bathroom breaks, and rest.
